WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Number of orders:
Services in a warehouse sometimes stretch beyond simply storing
goods and many significant actions need to be considered as part of its
working systems. Parts or series of goods with its own designated
storage keeping units are kitted together to formulate a new set of
storage keeping units. When WMS is the kernel factor here, order
management and fulfillment play a pivotal role in the creation and
tracking of tracking pick and pack orders.
How do warehouse manager assign workloads?
There are many similarities with the work of logistics and distribution
managers, although a position as a warehouse manager is less involved

Forecasting
Forecasting is a technique that uses historical data as inputs to make
informed estimates that are predictive in determining the direction of
future trends. Titan Logistics Inc. utilize forecasting to determine how
to allocate our budgets or plan for anticipated expenses for an

How does your warehouse facilitate warehouse processes?

To facilitate a good flow, it is important that internal warehouse layout
must be associated with external warehouse layout. Congestion outside
the warehouse, caused by parking area constraints can also affect all
warehouse activities. So it is very important to manage warehouse
layout efficiency both in terms of internal and external space to ensure
that potential bottlenecks will not impact warehouse productivity.
There are also other factors to look out for the layout of a warehouse.

a) Future storage requirement – Forecasting your stock profiles and

access requirements are key factors to consider before any re-planning
of your warehouse space can begin.

b) Adaptability – Even careful forecasting won’t account for every

subtle shift in requirements throughout the life of your warehouse. In
order to best prepare yourself for these changes, keep ease of
adaptability in mind when designing the original layout. As your sales
volumes increase, or the design or sizing product packaging changes,
may find yourself in urgent need of extra space or a different kind of
storage. These changes can potentially cost a lot of time, money and
resources if a major overhaul is needed. So designing your warehouse
layout to easily accommodate small changes can save you a lot of
hassle.

c) Flow of warehouse – A major factor drastically affecting warehouse

layout is the flow of goods within the facility. If your warehouse is an
existing structure, then the decision may already be made for you due
to the current positioning of docks and loading bays. If you are building
a new facility however, think about which system best suits your needs.

d) Types of racking – Storage and pallet racking comes in many different

sizes, shapes and formats, and the type you use will depend heavily on
the types of products you are storing. Carefully consider your
requirements as this will affect the amount of space you require and
influence the layout of the facility as a whole. A common practice now
is to effectively build your warehouse from the inside-out; this ensures
you will have adequate space for racking and other facilities.

How do you receive items?

Pre-receiving
For the warehouse receiving process to run efficiently, you’ll need to
establish and enforce receiving requirements for suppliers, shippers,
and/or carriers. The objective is for them to present the cargo in a way
that is quick and easy to process.

When working with suppliers, if possible, have the warehouse manager

coordinate packaging requirements such as:

• Label position
• Label Information
• Palletized or loose cargo

• Number of packages per pallet

• Items per carton
• Acceptable package size & weight

In the case of shippers or customers that don’t have control over

packaging, require them to provide clear, detailed information and
notify the warehouse of new incoming shipments. Often, freight
forwarders receive cargo that doesn’t clearly state who the consignee
or final recipient is.
As for the carriers, very often they fail to organize cargo according to
the order of the delivery route, resulting in cargo having to be unloaded
to reach the goods actually being delivered at a location. Another
problem is drivers not having all documentation in hand when they
arrive to the receiving area.
To minimize these issues, inform all carriers that proper documentation
must be in hand upon arrival and cargo must be organized in relation to
the delivery route.
Let them know your business will not be responsible for any delays or
potential penalties that result from failure to comply with these
recommendations.
Keep track of suppliers, shippers, and carriers that create the most
problems.

Finally, try to receive cargo as palletized whenever possible. Not only

will this help you speed up the receiving process, but it’ll also reduce
cargo damage and help speed up subsequent warehouse processes.

PUT-AWAY
When optimizing warehouse operations, put-away process is very
critical step in increasing warehouse efficiency. The initial placement of
goods has a direct impact on all of our subsequent warehouse
processes. Our warehouse will focus on gathering data such as product
key, code, size, weight, cost and colour with the objective of finding the
most optimal storage location. The warehouse will use direct put-away
method; the cargo is directly moved from our receiving area without
going through a staging phase. Doing this approach will not only speeds
up the process of our operation but also reduces handling and space
requirements in our warehouse.

STACKING
As we practice stacking methods, we need to consider the height and
weight of the material being stacked that our warehouse will use to
prevent a collapse. Our warehouse will use block stacking. Block
stacking refers to unit loads stacked on top of each other and stored on
the warehouse floor in lanes or blocks. The pallets will be stacked to a
specific height based on some criteria such as pallet condition, the
weight of the load, height clearance and the capability of the

warehouse forklifts. We chose this method because it is cheap to

implement as it involves no racking and can be operated in any
warehouse with open floor space.

ORDER PICKING
Our warehouse will use batch picking method. In this case, our workers
can pick multiple orders at a time, with both manual and automated
picking. The manual picking environment works by allowing the picker
to pick orders required for multiple orders at a time. This minimizes the
travel time. With automated picking, the worker remains in one
location while horizontal and vertical carousels deliver the required
order to the worker.
SHIPPING
Shipping involves transferring the package to the selected carrier and
updating the shipping information. Before our product can be shipped,
there are several things we need to be addressed. Most important is
determining the type of shipping materials best suited for the shipment
that we will make. Knowing what we will ship in advance is crucial in
order to have the appropriate shipping materials on hand. We will ship
through boxes, for it provides wide storage. In order to process our
shipments, first we need to aggregate and manage order information
This step involves getting the order information, validating addresses,
confirming inventory availability, combining orders going to the same
address (or separating orders going to different addresses) and
preparing the order for shipment. Next step is picking, packing,

weighing, choosing carrier and label; this is the process of picking and
packing the products ordered, weighing the shipment, choosing the
right carrier and labelling the package for delivery to the end
customer’s address. Last is to ship the order through our chosen
courier.
