WORKSHOP AGENDA
• This will be an demonstration workshop of 2 hours where your advised to
observe and make notes where ever required.

• For our demonstration we will be using SOLIDWORKS 2018 software.

• This workshop will revise your basic knowledge of Design and

Manufacturing.
INTRODUCTION

• Attempt to make Engineering so simple that even

Non - Technical Personnel can understand.
• “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t
understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein

INTO MANUFACTURABLE PRODUCTS
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Business (Idea) point of view:

• Make your product appealing to consumers
• Customize products in order to target different customers (e.g. watche, phones)
• Develop the brand (e.g. Apple ’s « Think Different » strategy; i Pod)

ERGONOMICS AESTHETIC
ERGONOMICS

Greek Words “Ergon = work, Nomikos = law”

Ergonomics -- Study of Work Laws
ERGONOMICS

•The science of fitting workplace conditions and job

demands to the capabilities of workers.

•The goal is to find a “best fit” between the worker and the
job conditions.
ERGONOMICS

• Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) are health disorders arising from repeated
biomechanical stress to the hands, wrist, elbows, shoulders, neck, back

• Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect soft tissue of the body in areas like
the neck, back, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, and fingers. These include nerves,
tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and muscles

AESTHETICS
• Aesthetics, is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty
and taste, as well as the philosophy of art.
• It examines subjective and sensori-emotional values, or sometimes called
judgments of sentiment and taste.[1]
AESTHETICS
There are two traditional views concerning what constitutes aesthetic
values
• The first finds beauty to be objective, that is inherent in the entity
itself
• The second position holds that beauty is subjective, in that it
depends on the attitude of the observer

GD&T
• GD&T stands for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. It is a
system of symbols, rules and definitions used to define the
geometry of mechanical parts.
• Improves Communication
• Provides Better Product Design
• Increases Product Tolerance

JIGS & FIXTURE
JIGS & FIXTURE
• The successful running of any mass production depends upon the interchangeability to
facilitate easy assembly and reduction of unit cost.
• Mass production methods demand a fast and easy method of positioning work for accurate
operations on it.
• Jigs and fixtures are production tools used to accurately manufacture duplicate and
interchangeable parts.
• Jigs and fixtures are specially designed so that large numbers of components can be machined
or assembled identically, and to ensure
interchangeability of components.
JIGS & FIXTURE
JIGS
• It is a work holding device that holds, supports and locates the workpiece and guides the cutting
tool for a specific operation.
• Jigs are usually fitted with hardened steel bushings for guiding or other cutting tools. a jig is a type
of tool used to control the location and/or motion of another tool.
• A jig's primary purpose is to provide repeatability, accuracy, and interchangeability in the
manufacturing of products.
• A device that does both functions (holding the work and guiding a tool) is called a jig.
• An example of a jig is when a key is duplicated, the original is used as
a jig so the new key can have the same path as the old one.
JIGS & FIXTURE
• FIXTURES
• It is a work holding device that holds, supports and locates the workpiece for a specific
operation but does not guide the cutting tool.
• It provides only a reference surface or a device. What makes a fixture unique is that each
one is built to fit a particular part or shape.
• The main purpose of a fixture is to locate and in some cases hold a workpiece during either
a machining operation or some other industrial process.
• A jig differs from a fixture in that a it guides the tool to its correct position in addition to
locating and supporting the workpiece.
Examples: Vises, chucks
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF JIGS
AND FIXTURES DESIGN
• LOCATING POINTS
• FOOL PROOF
• REDUCTION OF IDLE TIME
• WEIGHT OF JIGS AND FIXTURES
• JIGS PROVIDED WITH FEET
• MATERIALS FOR JIGS AND FIXTURES
• CLAMPING DEVICE
