ENGINEERING SERVICE BULLETIN ‘SUBJECT: MODELS: PURPOSE: Service Bulletin #228 Revised Engine Cylinder Head Torquing Procedure All 10-1/2" stroke Superior engines using the metal elastomer Tiner-to-block gasket Ajax-Superior has received complaints in regard to engine cylinder head fire ring leakage after installation. We feel this leakage can be caused in two ways; 1) Liner-to-block, head-to-liner and head-to-block gaskets dimensional variation resulting in in- seem se crush of the heads-to-liner (fire ring) gasket 2) Improper torquing procedures resulting in "cocked" cylinder heads Al] Superior 10-1/2" stroke engines have a cylinder head torque of 380 ft-ibs. After the engine is run up to operating tempera- tures, the heads should be retorqued to the 380 Ft-Lbs. hot. These torque figures should be used in conjunction with the follow- ‘ing gaskets: ENGINE MODEL LINER TO BLOCK HEAD TO LINER HEAD To BLocK ANT 825 Gas 034-994-007 909-981-250 034-365, 909-981-269 033-697 40 (8-1/2" Bore) 40 (9-1/8" Bore) 034-994-006 40 Vee(10" Bore) 034-994-008 909-981-239 NOTE: All part numbers subject to change due to continual product improvements. Never use Molybdenum-disul fide lubricants as excessive stresses will result when using the specified torque. 2) ylinder head nuts down to the head by hand, then ich nut in numerical sequence per sketch beiow. Coarse thread cylinder head studs have been used since 1989. The following torque increments should be used depend- ing on whether the stud and nut is coarse thread or fine thread.
