Reaction Paper

Fulvio Mazzocchi, a researcher from the CNR's Institute for Atmospheric Pollution in
Moneterotondo, Italy, wrote an article called "Western science and traditional knowledge"
(EMBORep. 2006 May). The article's content includes a detailed discussion of different aspects
of western science and traditional knowledge. Mazzochi provides insight into the conflicting
roots of these methods. He also goes into detail about the gaps and similarities between their
approaches to learning about the human environment. This aspect highlights the importance of
considering these two methods in the development of understanding and to quote, “most
characterizations of truth are manifestations of the same skills development that is
fundamental to human life.”

Mazzocchi's work, In my opinion, proves to us that there is no standardized approach to

learning. Not all have to be written down or should be written down. It may be a person's
culture, way of life, and ability to adapt. Traditional awareness encourages this. according to
the article, “Traditional knowledge has developed a concept of the environment that
emphasizes the symbiotic character of humans and nature”. Traditional knowledge experts
have discovered a way for humans and nature to live side by side through a shared mechanism
of shared responsibility. The said holistic approach is something I agree that humans must take
into account as they progress. We could minimize the adverse consequences of our success if
we gave nature this much importance. This is not to suggest that Western science isn't
valuable, it has its merits. Western science allowed us to gain access to a better deal of our
present understanding. Traditional knowledge, on the other hand, I conclude, should be valued
just as much as Western knowledge. I'm concerned that the scientific method of gaining
information has become so dominant in our culture that it may soon eventually replace useful
local knowledge.

In the science and technology lectures I've studied, we've always talked about what science and
technology are all about, but not about how they can be understood. Mazzocchi's article is a
great explanation of how to start learning something new. It is straightforward and convincing,
each paragraph serves a significant role in the quest to comprehend the content of the article.
This is something I would suggest to anyone who seeks to improve how to gain knowledge and
understand the various approaches and implementations with this knowledge.
