Activity Sheet 1.1 (Topic: Teaching as a Profession, Vocation and Mission)

Provide a concise (1-3 sentences) answer to each of the following questions.

1. How do you rate yourself in a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest) in terms of your capacity to do the
tasks of a teacher? Why?

I give myself an 8 for my ability to perform the tasks of a teacher since teachers play such an important
part in the lives of the students in their classes, and I need to work on becoming more responsible.

2. What are the first two requirements to be achieved to be able to legally practice the teaching
profession in the elementary level and the high school level?

The ability to obtain a college degree in their professions is the first requirement. The second
requirement is to pass a government-administered licensure examination.

3. The professional license of a teacher needs to be renewed every three (3) years. What is the
requirement for its renewal? Why is it required of a professional teacher?

To renew their PRC license, professional teachers must complete 45 Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) units. It is necessary since it will improve educational quality and ethical services.

4. A full-fledged practicing professional teacher must be an active member of a professional


organization. What benefit can he/she enjoy from the membership?

Lead to new discoveries, collaboration opportunities, and the ability to mentor many types of
educational programs are among the advantages they enjoy from the membership.

5. The hallmark of every profession is the commitment of its members to a code of ethics. What is the
purpose of the code of ethics to a professional group like the teachers?

The purpose of the code of ethics for teachers is to protect the rights of students. They must recognize
that by accepting a teaching post, they are agreeing to adhere to the code of ethics.

6. If an examinee of the licensure examination for secondary teachers gets 45% in general education and
85% in the professional education and 75% in the area of specialization, he/she passed the
examination. Do you agree? Explain your answer.

He/she failed the exam since his/her GenEd score was below 50% and the average was only 73%.
7. If an examinee of the licensure examination for elementary teachers gets 57% in general education
and 81% in the professional education, he/she passed the examination. Do you agree? Explain your
answer.

He/She didn’t pass the examination that’s because the average was 71.4% which was less than 75% of
the passing score.

8. Why is teaching a vocation?

Teaching is a vocation since it includes your entire career and the skills you've achieved through
practical and theoretical abilities. Teaching is not a one-way path, but rather a process of constant
feedback between teacher and student. Both the teacher and the student are involved in the learning
process.

9. Why is teaching a mission?

Teaching is a mission since teachers encourage their students to learn in different ways and becoming a
teacher involves a great deal of responsibility.
