WORLD PEANUT MEETING 2021 - The Argentina Peanut Chamber hosted a World Peanut Meeting last week featuring country
leaders discussing peanut supply and demand, key issues and trends. We tuned in to hear the different presentations about peanuts and
the future: Presentations were excellent. Here are a few updates:
China, the number one importer of U.S. peanuts reported that they plan to keep buying U.S. peanuts, but not as many. Their
harvest is the same time as the U.S., but look for better quality and quantity this year. The Chinese farmer is expecting a higher price
because cost of raw materials has increased, farm machinery is up 15%, rent is up 15-20% and labor is up 15%.
China reported 1 million tons of peanuts imported in 2020, mostly for peanut oil. Exports are about the same, l/2 million to
400,000 MT. Cost of freight, containers continue to rise, need more ships and cost of freight may cause exports to decrease.
For Chinese consumption, 51% is utilized in oil crushing (9,600,000 MT). A total of 42% or 8,150,000 MT are for edible
use. Another 3% is for seed and only 2% exported.
For the future, in-shell and big kernel demand are expected to remain stable. Lots of promotion on HO(High Oleic) peanut
oil, consumers think more healthy premium oil. There is a problem about purity, but high potential demand. It may be 2023 before
freight costs return to normal as the COVID outbreak is causing more problems.
Ivana Cavigliasso of Argentina noted that aflatoxin is almost non-existent in Argentina peanuts. The industry has made high
investments in industrial plants and equipment. Quality standards certification allows product traceability. They are implementing a
sustainability program that will measure carbon footprints in the future.
Argentina is exporting 712,000 MT this year and has production of 1,101,000 tons…90% HO runners. The harvest showed
2.61 tons per hectare. Domestic usage in Argentina totals 34,200 MT with oil-stock a total of 205,000 MT.
MORE REPORTS LATER – Russia dropped a bombshell on the meeting announcing that ALL containers, including
grain products, peanuts, etc, will be inspected for aflatoxin, chemicals and heavy metals. Most of their imports are from Brazil.
SEPTEMBER 13 – TODAY IS NATIONAL PEANUT DAY - On September 13th National Peanut Day pays homage to mighty and
tasty peanut. Likely originating in South America around 3,500 years ago, this legume is not a nut. They grow underground, like
potatoes. Since they are an edible seed that forms in a pod, they belong to the family Leguminosae with peas and beans. When it
comes to plants packing protein power, peanuts provide a whopping 8 grams per ounce.
The peanut is also high in antioxidants. Not only are peanuts high in vitamins E and B6, but they’re rich in minerals such as
magnesium, iron, and zinc. Studies also show when paired with other nutrient-rich foods, this wonderful legume helps us absorb
nutrients better, too. Just like the cotton gin revolutionized the cotton industry, planters and harvesters transformed not only the
peanut farm but farming the world over. Today is a great day to sample a new peanut snack…peanuts or peanut butter.
