The Botanical Garden Alexandru Buia

Botanical Garden „Al. Buia ”, under the leadership of the University of Craiova, was
established on the initiative and under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Univ. Alexandru Buia in
1952, is a scientific, didactic and educational institution. He saw the the fact that it could not
be a higher agronomic or horticultural education without a university botanical garden.

The Botanical Garden is located in the south-west part of Craiova city and has a surface
of about 12,8 hectares. It is a place that should not be avoided. After last year's rehabilitation,
it regained its brilliance in the middle of the twentieth century, when it was designed and
arranged according to the plans of Professor Alexandru Buia, whose name it bears. The green
oasis is now the daily refuge of thousands of visitors, attracted by the more than 6,000 species
of plants and shrubs, but also by the beauty of rare flowers. The garden has many sectors,
among them are found : The herbarium, The Ornametal sector, The Floristic Provinces sector
of the globe

The herbarium is a component of great importance in any botanical garden. It started with
about 10,000 sheets edited by Flora Romaniae Exsiccata (F.R.E.), which were bought by the
University of Craiova from the Borza family. Along with it was added the herbarium prof. Al.
Buia, consisting of 20,000 sheets of plants collected from all provinces of Romania and
determined, mostly by his reign.Numerous sheets of pressed plants are added to the two
herbs; the enrichment of the collection is continuous, bringing plants from the spontaneous
flora harvested during field trips, but also species present in the sectors of the botanical
garden. The herbarium, with special scientific value, is permanently available to teachers,
researchers and students, as well as to all people interested and passionate about
botany.Within the Botanical Garden „Al. Buia ” there are collections of plants represented by:
dahlias, roses, irises, tulips, water lilies, peonies. The Ornamental Sector is flat, starting from
the entrance of visitors on Iancu Jianu Street, it includes 145 taxa. It provides throughout the
growing season, in addition to a rich and varied collection of plants and a pleasant decoration
at the entrance to the Botanical Garden. The Floristic Provinces sector of the globe comprises
1200 taxa and is located in the southwestern part of the garden. It operates with the following
provinces: Mediterranean, Caucasian, Central Asian, Southeast Asian and North American.

The Botanical Garden is the place where the man can reconnect with nature!
