Reinforcement Activity 2:

1. How would you differentiate the people of Guam and the islanders of Samar and
Cebu as to their encounter with Magellan and his men?

 The people of Guam raided Magellan's ship to pay for the water and food they
had given to the crew during their encounter with Magellan and his men,
therefore, they named the island "Isla de Ladrones" (Island of Thieves). The
islanders of Samar and Cebu, on the other hand, welcomed Magellan and his
men and also signed friendship pacts with them.

2. How did the people of Samar show their hospitality and friendliness?

 The Samar islanders welcome Magellan and his companions with open arms.
Their relationship was friendly, as they gave them what food they had such as
rice and coconuts, and offered them a place to stay, and they later signed a
friendship treaty.

3. What do you think were the reasons for their friendliness of these islanders especially
when they saw the big vessels?

 The ships were holding the region's most powerful chiefs, and Magellan and his
men may have been afraid that they might harm them because of their past
encounters with the thieves of the island of Guam, so they had to be kind and
courteous. Magellan and his companions demonstrated to the natives that they
had been sent by the King of Spain to do no harm in the name of peace. Also,
Magellan's people were still hungry and in need of shelter, and the only way they
could get food was from the Islanders.
