TASK 6 - PAGE 15 (BSA 1C_TRIXY BUSTAMANTE)

A. Readings No. 2 (Primary Source). Read the Poem by Andres Bonifacio “Pag-ibig Sa
tinubuang Lupa” then answer the preceding guide questions.

1. Is the poem by Andres Bonifacio a Primary or Secondary Source? Discuss your

answer.

Andres Bonifacio wrote the poem "Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa," known as the
"Father of the Philippine Revolution" because he led the Philippine revolutionaries in
asserting and defending the Filipinos' right to liberty from Spanish rule. Andres Bonifacio's
poem is a primary source because it contains immediate, first-hand accounts of a topic from
people who directly connect to it. For example, the title itself conveyed what Bonifacio
wished to share: his love for his country. The phrase "Castilang hamak" refers to the
Spaniards in the poem. He used words like "pagkabusabos," "kasuklam-suklam," and
"kapaitan" to describe the cruelty of the invaders. The terms used by Bonifacio indicate that
the Philippines was dying at the time. It means Bonifacio has gone through this and wants to
share his experience with us. As a result, it is based on actual events that occurred during
Bonifacio's lifetime.

2. What feeling did the poem “Pag-ibig sa tinubuang Lupa” by Andres Bonifacioevoke
in you?
Andres Bonifacio wrote the poem "Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa," known as the
"Father of the Philippine Revolution" because he led the Philippine revolutionaries in
asserting and defending the Filipinos' right to liberty from Spanish rule. This passionately
written work by Bonifacio was one of his contributions to the awakening of Filipinos from
their doomed plight at the time. And the feeling of Andres Bonifacio's poem "Pag-ibig sa
tinubuang Lupa" wants to tell us how he wants Filipinos to passionately love their own
country since one of Bonifacio's sentiments was the lack of nationalism among Filipinos. In
the first verse of his poem, he expresses this sentiment blatantly and explicitly. To be sure, he
believed that Filipinos had lost their sense of national pride. And the first stanza also are the
lines that struck me:
“Aling pag-ibig pa ang hihigit kaya
sa pagkadalisay
sa pagkadakila
Gaya ng pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa?
Aling pag-ibig pa? Wala na nga, wala.”
Bonifacio never ceased to show his love and patriotism for his motherland. Bonifacio
implicitly asserted that nationalism must come from within rather than from outside sources
because nationalism is supposed to be inherent rather than acquired. That is why it pained
him to see why Filipinos found it so hard to exude this, more so, taught to them. Henceforth,
if you love your country, it means you consider not only yourself, but all the people around
you. You genuinely care about other people's well-being and only wish them the best. You
make every effort to assist others in the best way possible. If you love your country, it means
you are loyal and committed to it, as well as to the people you meet in your life. This poem is
about being proud of one's nationality and country in general. We have to love, praise, and
fight for our own country and appreciate the things that it has to offer for us.
