 Do not use short hand of any kind.
 To use abbreviations you need to have used the
full term the first time it [term] is used.
 Refrain from using SMS (Short Message
System) language in essay writing.
 Use South African English.
 Write in grammatically correct language.
 Use appropriate punctuation.
 Write in own words.
 Do not use colloquial language as it can lead to ambiguity e.g. ‘a lot’(this
is not quantifiable and is not fact based).
 Write in the third person.
 Do not write notes on the side directed to me, on a personal level e.g
‘please give us marks’
 Leave both margins of the page for me to use.
 Keep your work neat.
 Use legible writing.
 Link up ideas and language between paragraphs and thoughts using
joining words, phrases etc. e.g:
