When was the last time you consulted a dictionary? Which word did you try to
find? When you found the meaning of the word in the dictionary, did you understand
its definition? Have you used the word both in writing and in speech? Do other
people understand the meaning of the word the same way you do?

Understanding the meaning of words can be a tricky business, because

language is dynamic; language continuously changes. As the world and the people
living in it change, so do the word and its meaning change. People who have
idiosyncratic interpretations of concepts; each one of us have different backgrounds
and personalities that determine we understand words. This is why defining is
essential. It enables us to understand words, and, in turn, makes other people
understand what we mean.

Writers use patterns to develop text. Two of the most commonly used patterns
are definition and exemplification

context clues (n.) hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a
reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar
words
thesauri (n.) plural noun: thesauri
a book that lists words in groups of synonyms and related
concepts.

Information 2.1: Definition

When writers use a definition pattern, they provide meaning to terms and ideas.

One of the most complicated concepts to explain in words is emotions. What is

happiness? How do you know when you are happy? Do the things that make you
happy, also make other people happy? Below is the table on which seven emotions
are listed. Enumerate the things or events that make you feel the following emotions.

Happiness Sadness Anger Nervousness Excitement Jealousy

Speaking of emotions? What is passion? What are you passionate about?

What is that one thing that you would never gladly do even if no one would tell you
to? What is that you would never get tired of doing? Without stopping, write about
your passion for five minutes. If you cannot pull all your thoughts into words, draw
illustrations to supplement your entry.

After writing, hold onto these questions and compare what you wrote as you
contrast them with Barbara C. Gonzalez’s notions of “passion” in excerpts of the
essay Appassionato.

The following underlined words are lifted form the Appassionato by Barbara C.
Gonzalez. Try to figure what the words mean with the help of context clues.

Analyzing passion is like defining love. We teeter dangerously on the brink of
mawkishness.

Excerpt 2:
Passion is visceral. It stands outside traditional thinking. It ignores conventions like
distance, time, and social acceptance.

Excerpt 3:
Love is softness; passion is smoulder. Love might be contentment, but passion is
adventure. It must be free, untethered. It must explore, drive beyond boundaries,
break moulds. Love is passive; passion is hyperactive. Where love is melancholic,
passion is pain

Process questions:
✔ How does the author compare and contrast love and passion?
✔ According to the three (3) excerpts given, how are passion and pain related? Is it
necessary to feel pain first before passion? Elaborate.

Two very important concepts most often associated with defining are denotation
and connotation. Denotation is the primary, explicit, or literal definition of a word.
Connotation, on the other hand, is the secondary meaning of a word.

Essential question: How does one apply definition in trying to understand human
emotions?

Information 2.2: Exemplification

5
Exemplification is defining something by giving examples.

Example: Books are considered to be credible and reputable resource materials to

consult when you are trying to find the definition of a word. Some examples are
dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, and manuals.

Activity Sheet 1.1
Direction: Below are the statements that synthesize our lesson on defining and
definition writing. Write “A” before the number if you agree with the statement, or “D’
if you disagree. Explain your answers.

perception of any word can also be interpreted differently by
different people, it is necessary to put denotation so that there is a
working definition in the essay.
_______2. Connotation and extended definition are optional in writing a
definition essay because people have different interpretations of
words and concepts that including then would only confuse
readers.
_______3. The techniques of defining mentioned above are only techniques
writers can choose from when dealing with a definition essay.
_______4. The definition essay is the most effective mode of paragraph
development when asked to make a concept paper.
_______5. It is important to explain and clarify how you understand a
concept that your reader can be persuaded into believing your

Assume the work of journalists. The class will form four groups. Each group
will be assigned an article to write (news, editorial, sports, feature). The articles
must present definitions and classifications of facts and ideas. All output will be
put together to come up with a class publication.
