This booklet has been designed to help you choose which of the local colleges to apply for and the courses that they offer.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CURRENT PREDICTED GRADES MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS.
If you do not meet the entry requirements, the college may choose not to offer you a place following an interview or, simply,
reject your application.
The FE colleges (Hopwood, Manchester, Oldham & Tameside) offer courses at Level 2 which means that if you don’t quite hit
the entry requirements for a Level 3, they will offer you a place on a Level 2 course.
Loreto and Xaverian Colleges use paper applications. You must print these and complete by hand. Give your completed
application to Mr. Farrand who will send them as a batch before the deadline. All other college applications are online - website
details are below.
We have had students, in the past, apply for colleges such as Blue Coat Sixth Form, Bury, Connell Sixth Form, Crompton House,
Pendleton and Rochdale Sixth Form. By all means, apply for these colleges but you must inform Mr. Farrand and your form tutor
which you have applied too.
For Sixth Forms/A Levels, you need to apply for 3/4 courses.
For FE Colleges/Vocational, you only apply for one course.
First Choices & Back Up Options
You are required to complete three college/course applications. Your first choice should be your “everything goes smoothly on
results day choice” – the absolute top of your list in terms of what you want to study and which college you want to attend. Your
second choice should be either a similar course at another college or an alternative course with lower entry requirements. Your
third choice could be a similar course again but at another college. For example;
If your first-choice college/course involves a level study, your back up plan/application must be an equivalent vocational/BTEC
course at an FE college – examples below.
This may sound obvious but, you should be applying for courses that will help you on the road to your future career. To be a
doctor, you’ll need a degree in Medicine. To achieve a degree in medicine, you’ll need A Levels in Chemistry or Biology and a
second science. Let’s say you apply to Oldham Sixth Form to study Chemistry and Biology but need a third subject to pick. You
might instinctively pick Physics, but it may also be worth considering a third subject that, while irrelevant to your career
aspirations, is linked to a hobby or interest of yours such as Dance, Drama, Photography, Film Studies, Travel & Tourism etc.
Below are a couple of popular A Level course combinations to get you thinking about that indecisive third subject.
1. Biology, Chemistry, 6. Modern Foreign Language, 11. Art and Design, Theatre and
Physics, Math Literature, Language Film Studies, Photography
2. Sociology, Psychology, 7. History, Geography, 12. Religious Studies,

A Levels
You can choose up to four but will drop one after the first year.
T Levels
Equivalent to three A-Levels – aimed at those predicted 6s or above.
If you apply for an apprenticeship, you need to be actively looking for a work placement to support the learning you
will undertake at college. Colleges will *help* but it is much easier for you and them if you have a work placement in
place before you enrol at the college. A work placement can be a job/apprenticeship that you have applied for or a
family member, with their own business, who will be happy to support you during the duration of the apprenticeship.
