The Wenzel Jar Accelerator will enhance the operation of a drilling or fishing jar when:
o Drill pipe stretch is insufficient due to shallow well depth
. Excessive wall drag restricts the free contraction of the stretched drill pipe.
The Jar Accelerator is a hydraulic spring that stores energy when tension is applied to
the drilling string. When the jar releases, the energy stored will accelerate the weight
above the jar creating the impact force.
Featuring a sealed and lubricated spline drive, the Accelerator will provide long service
life under high torque and stroking applications. Full torque can be transmitted through
the Accelerator.
Standard seals in the tool are effective to 250'F (120"C). Optional seals available are
effective to 400'F (200'C) for hot hole environments. External sealing surfaces are
tungsten carbide-coated to enhance wear and corrosion resistance.

2. Operation
2.1. General
Always apply Drill Collar thread compound meeting the requirements of A.P.l. on the
end connections.
Protect the sealing surface of the mandrel from damage during handling. Never apply
tongs, slips, chains, slings or strapping to this area.
Use a pick-up sub in the top connection when installing the Accelerator into the string.
When lifted to a vertical position, the Accelerator may open slightly. This occurs
normally. When tension is removed from the Accelerator it will return to the closed
position.
Apply rig tongs immediately adjacent to the top and bottom connections to avoid
breaking or torquing the body connections on the Accelerator. All the body connections
are torqued to specification at the service center. Avoid breaking these connections at
the rig.
Applying tension to the drill string will transfer energy to the hydraulic chamber. Follow
normal recommended practices for operating the fishing or drilling jar. The tension
applied to the string to activate a jarring cycle will load and extend the Accelerator.
Under normal drilling conditions, the recommended rotating hours before servicing the
Accelerator is 400 hours; provided that it has only been used during brief periods of light
jarring. The Accelerator should be completely serviced as soon as possible, following
any prolonged periods of heavy jarring At elevated temperatures (300-400"F [150-
200'C]) service is recommended after about 250 rotating hours.
2.2. Placement
The Accelerator is placed above the jar in the BHA. Sufficient mass should be placed
between the jar and the Accelerator.
about six lengths of heavy weight drill pipe.
The Accelerator must be installed in the string with the mandrel end up (box up and pin
down).
2.3. Operation
No special procedures are required. Follow normaljarring procedure. When overpull is
applied to the jar, the Accelerator will extend, storing the applied energy, until the jar
releases.

Refer to the applicable service manual for complete workshop repair and inspection
procedures.
New tools are shipped painted. The threaded ends are chemplated with iron-phosphate
and coated with rust preventative coating. Thread protectors are installed to eliminate
mechanical damage. The rust preventative coating must be removed using petroleum
base solvent and a stiff bristle brush before the jar is installed into the drill string.
Apply Drill Collar thread compound meeting the requirements of A.P.l. to the end
connections.
L Flush the bore of the tool with fresh water, to remove all drilling fluid and solids.
2. Wash external surfaces of the tool.
3. Apply thread compound and protectors to the end connections.
Protect the sealing surface of the mandrel from damage during handling and storage.
Never apply tongs, slips, chains, slings or strapping to this area.
