1. Introduction
Many smart products are available for ordinary people such as smart watches, smart
phones, smart mirror etc. All of the products are developed for the ordinary people to use
so that their life would get much easier and simpler. With the help of those gadgets
people’s life has changed drastically. But there is significant absence of gadgets for
people with disabilities. Among the people with disabilities, it is way more hard for the
people who are blind. Around 36 million people have no eyesight or blind according to
World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO, 2018). With no eye sight it is very difficult to
perform even simple task. It is way more difficult to walk around with not knowing what is
in front of them. The white cane that the blind people use when walking helps then to
navigate the ground but does not do much for above. There are many smart glasses for
visually impaired people but it is costlier and the people with average or low economic
condition can’t afford it (eyesight, 2019). So with the assistance of the smart glass, blind
people can feel if there was any sort of object in front of them that could strike their heads
on (Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, 2014). The device is designed in the form the
spectacle which can be worn by the blind people and Arduino mounted on the spectacle
will detect the obstacle with the help of sensors and notify the users through headphones
and vibration motors.
Problems
 Limits to perform every day’s task.
 Difficult to interact with the surrounding world
 Visiting some place is always a challenge.
 Smart Glasses for visually impaired problem are expensive
Solutions
 With the help of the smart glass, there would be less need of the stick while
walking.
 Due to the assistance of the smart glass, blind people can interact with the
surrounding world like normal people.
 It can be developed in affordable price.
2. Aims and Objectives
The main aims and objectives of the smart glasses are as follow:
Aims
 The main aim of this project is to help the blind people see, not literally, but make
life a little bit easier for them.
 Helps the blind people during mobility.
 Helps to avoid different kinds of obstacle by notifying the user during mobility.
 It is light weight, user friendly and affordable in price.
Objectives
The main objective of this device is provide a reliable, cost effective and low power
solution for the blind people which would help them to walk almost like any other normal
human being. the device can compute the distance between the person and each object
and can notify the user via headphones and vibration motors. The cost of the device will
be affordable for majority of visually impaired people.

Extra feature can be added in the future

Some extra features can be added in the future.
 GPS locator
 Wireless charging to recharge battery
 Converting text to speech
3. Expected outcomes and Deliverables
This device includes a pair of glasses and an obstacle detection module fitted in it in the
center, a processing unit i.e. Arduino pro mini., an output device i.e. headphones and
vibration motors and a power supply. The Obstacle detection module and the output
device is connected to the processing unit. The power supply is used to supply power to
the central processing unit. The obstacle detection module basically consists of an
ultrasonic sensor, processing unit consist of a control module and the output unit consists
of a vibration motor and headphones The control unit controls the ultrasonic sensors and
get the information of the obstacle present in front of the man and processes the
information and sends the output through the vibration motor and headphones
accordingly. These Ultrasonic Smart Glasses for Blind people is a portable device, easy
to use, light weight, user friendly and cheap in price. These glasses could easily guide
the blind people and help them avoid obstacles.

4. Project risks, threats and contingency

The prototype of the project consists of some risks to begin with. The glasses however
do indulge the user to only hear audio for the view in front of them and do not work for
the side view as well as the back view. The glasses also work on the basis of power
supply, hence making it difficult for the user to give continuous power supply to the device.
The glasses cannot be used for fast moving vehicles as it does not detect the motion of
any upcoming vehicles.
The risks above do have mitigation measures. The risk can be contingent by the use of
several measure:
 Use of extra sensor for back end and side view
 Use of motion sensor to detect fast moving vehicles
 Wireless charging for the limited power supply
5. Methodology
The smart glasses are developed using the Arduino pro mini, ultrasonic sensors, PCB
and vibration motors. The Arduino controls all the system resource like ultrasonic sensors,
vibration motors, switch, mp3 modules. Each of the devices and sensors in these smart
glasses plays a vital role in detecting and informing the users. The Arduino is the main
brain of this device so each and every sensors and other devices are connected to
Arduino using the PCB board. The coding for the Arduino is done in the Arduino IDE. The
ultrasonic sensor has the threshold value declared as it will detect the obstacle in front of
the people. When the ultrasonic sensor detects the obstacle in front of the people it will
send the input signal to the Arduino in which it will process the input signal and will give
the output to users through headphones and vibration motors.

9. Conclusion
Internet of things has proven itself to be the best technology of this generation. It has
made the human life simpler, easier to a greater extent. While the IOT can make a life of
a normal person easier, it can also help the disable people to make their life easy. With
the use of the smart glass, blind people can get the goo travel guidance and can minimize
the risk of hitting obstacle or minimizing the accident. It will help the blind people to know
about the surrounding and go wherever they want without relying on other people too
much.

Through this project, I hope to help the blind people to do walk more freely feeling secure
without need any guidance to them.
