Vir das
Introduction
Vir Das is an Indian comedian, actor and comedy
musician. After beginning a career in stand-up comedy,
Das moved to Hindi cinema starring in films like Delhi
Belly, Badmaash Company and Go Goa Gone. In 2017,
he entered the international stage with his Netflix
special Abroad Understanding.

Personal opinion
Vir das is my favourite stand-up comic and I really
admire his stage confidence no matter how big the
audience is he is always able to bring a smile on their
faces besides that he is also one of the first stand-up
comics in India. Today the stand-up scene in India is
very wide it’s a very huge source of entertainment to
mass crowd. Stand up is mostly well known for people
below 30 but a wide crowd from older age groups is
also seen
He has inspired me and many others like me to follow
their passion as stand up was not a very renounced
profession and yet he made it one

Contribution to Indian stand-up

Long before ‘stand-up’ became common in the city’s
lexicon, the likes of Chandler, Papa CJ, Vir Das and
Cyrus Broacha had already established their reputations
as ‘funnymen’. And in the absence of comedy clubs,
these artistes performed at pubs and cafés like Café
Goa, Not Just Jazz by the Bay, Blue Frog and IBar. The
Bombay Elektrik Project (also the team behind The
Hive in Bandra) held open mic nights. Inspiration also
came from watching international stand-up acts on TV
and, of course, from the first big Indian-origin
comedian, Russell Peters.
Vir Das, the seasoned comedian, started Hamateur
Nights in 2009. “Five years ago, I was performing for
600 people every weekend. Now, that number is
between 3,000 to 5,000,” he says.
It was in 2010 that The Comedy Store opened at
Palladium, Lower Parel. It would turn out to be the
catalyst the local scene needed. The space initially
featured international acts, but Indian acts would fill in
10-minute slots in between the ‘star’ performers who
were being flown down. Charlotte Ward, director of
The Comedy Store, says Mumbai was the clear choice
as the first Indian venue: “The city had a certain
atmosphere. It had pubs, an improv scene, and all the
(budding) comedians lived here.”
That’s where the present set of star comedians honed
their skills. The city got artistes such as Ashish
Shakya, Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi and Aditi Mittal.
Others, like Sorabh Pant, worked with Das. These
initial movements resulted in collectives like AIB
formed by Gursimran Khamba and Tanmay Bhat,
among others; East India Comedy (EIC) by Pant and
Kunal Rao, among others; Schitzengiggles Stand Up
Comedy by Karan Talwar and Varun Thakur, among
others; and Weirdass Comedy by Das.

circle of vir’s life

Vir Das He is among the few people in Bollywood
who never had a Godfather to teach them the ropes
of the industry. Instead, he paved his own path. And
he's done exceedingly well for himself.
In a beautiful and inspiring post on Facebook, Vir
Das shared how he was once a doorman at the
Grand Lux Cafe in Chicago, and how this time he
went there to perform instead. What a beautiful note
it is.
When life comes full circle, you know the struggles
you have been through were worth it.
his story is truly inspiring for millions out there who
struggle to fulfil their dreams.

7 things I learnt from Vir Das

Be Stupid
Only if you embrace the stupidity in your life do you
really live. Try to see how the situation you are in, is/can
be very stupid.
Common Sense
Common sense is quite overrated and much worse than
that it is COMMON!

Memorable
Try to be memorable!
No one remembers those who agreed with others, be
bold and agree to disagree, fight in what you believe
Validation
Be careful, Validation isn't real.

You don’t have to broadcast a fantastic life that you

aren’t actually living. People on social media aren't
always what they seem to be.

Just keep Learning

You are never too old to learn.

Every new skill you try to learn will make you work hard
and give you satisfaction of doing something out of
ordinary.

Failure or Success
One day if you fail and hit rock bottom, go celebrate it.
Buy something expensive for yourself. If you become
very successful, go home and sleep like nothing has
changed.

Show the universe that it does not own your moment

you do.

Opinions
What people think about you is none of your business,
don’t let their opinions pollute your moments.
Don't respond and try to defend yourself by
condensation, if you do it's only feeding the trolls.

-Comedy comes from confusion.

-Whatever movies I sign; they have to get me out

of my comfort zone. Otherwise, I would get bored
very easily.
