ACTIVITY 1: 1. State five characteristics of human development from a life-span perspective and their
implications to child care, education and parenting.

Characteristics of human development from a Educational Implication to Child Care, Education

life-span perspective and Parenting

1. Development is lifelong. No age dominates development. As individuals

move through life, they are faced with many
challenges, opportunities, and situations that
impact their development.
2. Development is plastic. Capacity for change. The rate of change for some
abilities (example: physical functioning) can be
affected by specific activities (example: regular
exercise).
3. Development consists of biological, Development is a co-construction of biological,
cognitive, and socio-dimensions cultural, and individual factors working together.
For example, the brain shapes culture, but it is
also shaped by culture and the experiences that
individual has or pursue.
4. Development is contextual Contexts include families, schools, peer groups,
churches, cities, neighborhoods, university
laboratories, countries and so on. Each of these
settings is influenced by historical, economic,
social and cultural factors. We are influenced by
when and where we live. Our actions, beliefs, and
values are a response to the circumstances
surrounding us.
5. Development involves growth, As individuals age into middle and late adulthood,
maintenance and regulation. the maintenance and regulation of loss in their
capacities takes center stage away from growth.
Example, a 75-year-old man might aim not to
improve his memory or his golf swing but to
maintain his independence and his ability to play
golf at all.

2. “Growth is an evidence of life” or “development is an evidence of life”. What does this

mean? What does this imply to a person’s development?

 Growth for a personal interpretation to a person means that we must value ourselves in this world on
how to cope with environmental changes in order to survive. We must consider simple things for
ourselves such as healthy lifestyle, proper and healthy diet as well as regular exercise in order to
grow and live. We must know how to deal with circumstances in our daily lives through positive
behavior. We continue to live and continue to grow by adapting to changes. Growing is hard, not
only to the physical aspect but also mentally. Physical growth is the law of nature and mental growth
is a personal concern. Growth involves change and change involves pain. We must also grow
mentally and emotionally. Physical growth is given, but mental and psychological growth is the most
critical one. These are the things that describes how growth is an evidence of life. Life that we are
currently live in, and life that we continue to give beauty.
