People laugh when they see or hear all the conversations that took place between

Researchers focused on a group of people
involved in a situation of the utmost
seriousness – a murder trial. They examined

realised they had misunderstood an important
piece of information relating to a sentence for
one of the charges. There had been confusion
about whether the sentence was 30 days or
30 years and this led to laughter across the
room. By laughing together, the jury was able
to release pent-up tension; but they also
demonstrated to each other their willingness
to work as a team and not let a commonly
made mistake affect their ability to reach a
decision.
Within the same group, however, laughter
could sometimes have quite negative effects.
At times, the researchers observed that group

laughter could indicate a lack of support of
certain individuals. For example, somebody
might make a comment about another
member of the group that seemed harmless,
but if it caused some of the jurors to laugh,
that laughter created a subtle barrier between
the people who were amused and the people
who weren’t.
Nevertheless, the study proves that laughter is
about much more than just enjoying a joke. It
plays an important role in helping us interact
with others positively so that we can
communicate better, reach agreements and
make joint decisions.
