SUMMARY:

Egg donors

A process in which a woman donor take hormone injections to

produce several eggs. When the eggs mature, they are retrieved and sperm
from the recipient's partner or a donor is added to the eggs. After 2 or 5 days,
when embryos have formed, one is inserted into the recipient woman’s uterus.
In the two to three weeks prior to the embryo transfer, the recipient woman
takes hormones to make sure the lining in the uterus is ready for an embryo to
implant. If a pregnancy is confirmed, the hormone treatment continues for
another 8-10 weeks.

Treatment with donor eggs may be needed when the woman:

May be needed when the woman does not produce eggs or her eggs
are of low quality, experienced several miscarriages, or has a high risk of
passing on a genetic disease or abnormality to a child.

Advantage for donors include:

Health screenings, doctors ensures that the donor is not only fertile but
also healthy. In which they provide blood tests, STI/STD screening, genetic
testing para ma.assess for common fertility and genetic issues. Not only these
provide information to the donor about her health status but also peace of
mind for her reproductive plans in the future.

Compensation, the recipients cover the donor’s medical expenses and

there are cases where the donor is paid a large amount of money if her egg is
healthy and has history of producing successful pregnancies.

Chance to help another person,  with donating egg cells you give a
chance for people who are desperate for a family.

Chance to preserve one’s own eggs are given if you ever have plans of
having children in the future but it costs a lot of money and were usually more
suited when you are financially stable.

Safe and short medical procedure, even though the process can take a
bit of time depending in the woman’s fertility, the actual procedure is quite
short, and the drugs involved in egg donation have been used and tested on
thousands of women and are guaranteed as safe.

Disadvantages for donors:

Risk of side effects, medications affect one’s body these include

affected mood and health, temporary weight gain, ovarian hyperstimulation
syndrome which are rare, or when the donor’s cycle will not work.
Psychological concerns, the thought of giving a part of you to another
person tend to affect you psychologically, undergoing counseling to be
prepared mentally and emotionally before donating is highly encouraged.

Time and commitment, egg donation has certain required period as it

revolves around a woman’s physical cycle, better make room to your
schedule when undergoing the donation process.

Embryo donors

A procedure that enables embryos which are either created by couples

undergoing fertility treatment or were created from donated sperm and eggs
specifically for the purpose of donation to be transferred to infertile patients in
order to achieve a pregnancy or to a researcher to further the study of
reproductive medicine. Some people who have frozen embryos that they don’t
need choose to donate them for someone else to use but they are rarely done
as they must pay for the rest of their lives and it is expensive. Then the
recipient woman takes hormones in preparation for the embryo transfer and
when she is ready, embryos are thawed and transferred to her uterus.

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is performed before the embryos are

transferred to the uterus, it is to identify genetic abnormalities
in embryos created via (IVF). In PGT, the embryos are generated through the
process of IVF or ICSI and then a few cells are removed from the embryo and
screened for the genetic condition. Embryos that are not affected by the
genetic condition are then selected for transfer to the woman's uterus.

It has 2 types: PGT-M and PGT-SR also known as the pre-implantation

genetic diagnosis (PGD).

PGT-M, is for monogenic/single gene defects and is used to identify

embryos that are not affected by a ‘faulty’ gene that can lead to disease (e.g.
cystic fibrosis, Marfan syndrome, Huntington's disease Hemochromatosis,
etc).

PGT-SR, is for chromosomal structural rearrangements and is used to

identify embryos that have an incorrect amount of genetic material (e.g.
deletions, duplications, inversions, and translocations).

Assisted reproductive treatment clinics in Victoria perform PGT to avoid

a range of conditions and some cases include Surrogacy which involves a
woman (the surrogate) carrying a child for another person or couple with the
intention of giving the child to that person or couple after birth.
