Introduction

Self-efficacy is defined as people’s beliefs about their capabilities to produce

designated levels of performance that exercise influence over events that affect their lives

(Bandura, 1997). According to Bandura, “people’s beliefs is their personal efficacy influence

what course of action they choose to pursue, how much effort they will invest in activities,

how long they will persevere in the face of obstacles and failure experiences, and their

resiliency following setbacks. “Bandura used the term self-efficacy to refer it to the belief of

one person that he or she is capable to successfully carry “courses of action required to deal

with a wide variety of experiences, tasks and situations, containing many unpredictable,

ambiguous, and even stressful elements.”

Self-efficacy was introduced by Bandura (1977) as "an integrative theoretical

framework to explain and predict psychological changes achieved by different modes of

treatment". Subsequent empirical studies appear to support the contention that self-efficacy

ratings on specific behavioural tasks are accurate predictors of subsequent behavioural

performance on those tasks. According to Bandura, “people’s beliefs is their personal efficacy

influence what course or action they choose to pursue, how much effort they will invest in

activities, how long they will persevere in the face of obstacles and failure experiences, and

there resiliency following setbacks.” Bandura used the term self-efficacy to refer it to the

belief of one person that he or she is capable to successfully carry “courses of action required

to deal with a wide variety of experiences, tasks and situations, containing many

unpredictable, ambiguous, and even stressful elements.”

Bandura believes that people are expected to engage in activities in the extent that they

perceive themselves to be competent to those activities. Bandura and others found that self

efficacy plays a role in how goals, tasks, and challenges are approached. Although people can

identify what goals they would like to accomplish or what things they want to change or

achieve, still they also come into the realization that this goals are not quite simple. Bandura

contends that “efficacy beliefs are the foundation of human agency.” People with a strong

sense of self-efficacy are more likely to act and to be successful than those people with a low

or weak sense of self-efficacy. People with strong sense of self-efficacy view challenging

problems as tasks to be mastered, these people develop a deeper interest in the activities in

which they participate; they form a stronger sense of commitment to their interest and

activities, and they quickly from seatbacks and disappointments. While people with a weak

sense of self-efficacy would tend to avoid tasks that challenge them, they believe that difficult

tasks and situations are beyond their capabilities, they are much focused on their personal

failings and negative outcomes and they easily lose confidence in abilities they possess.

According to Bandura, “people who regard themselves as highly efficacious act, think, and

feel differently from those who perceive themselves as in efficacious.”

According to Bandura self efficacy is not the sole determinant of behavior, although it

has a powerful causal influence on people’s actions. Self-efficacy produce behavior combines

with environment, prior behavior and other personal variables, especially outcome

expectations. The environment, behavior as well as the person has an interactive influence on

one another as suggested in the triadic reciprocal causal model and these refers to self-efficacy

person factors. Bandura contends that people’s actions toward a particular situations

dependent on the reciprocity of behavioral, environmental, and cognitive conditions

People's beliefs about their efficacy can be developed by four main sources of

influence. The most effective way of creating a strong sense of efficacy is through mastery

experiences. Successes build a robust belief in one's personal efficacy. Failures undermine it,

especially if failures occur before a sense of efficacy is firmly established. If people

experience only easy successes they come to expect quick results and are easily discouraged

by failure. A resilient sense of efficacy requires experience in overcoming obstacles through

perseverant effort. Some setbacks and difficulties in human pursuits serve a useful purpose in

teaching that success usually requires sustained effort. After people become convinced they

have what it takes to succeed, they persevere in the face of adversity and quickly rebound

from setbacks. By sticking it out through tough times, they emerge stronger from adversity.

The second way of creating and strengthening self-beliefs of efficacy is through the

vicarious experiences or social modeling provided by social models. Seeing people similar to

oneself succeed by sustained effort raises observers' beliefs that they too possess the

capabilities to master comparable activities required to succeed. By the same token, observing

others' fail despite high effort lowers observers' judgments of their own efficacy and

undermines their efforts. The impact of modeling on perceived self-efficacy is strongly

influenced by perceived similarity to the models. The greater the assumed similarity the more

persuasive is the models' successes and failures. If people see the models as very different

from themselves their perceived self-efficacy is not much influenced by the models' behavior

and the results its produces.

Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to assess the self efficacy and performance of the students in
Iligan Medical Center College .

Specifically, the study would like to answer the following questions;

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

2. What are the determinants of failures and accomplishments that the students

experienced affect their later performance.

3. What are the effect of physiological and emotional states on the person’s performance

in a particular task.

4. What is the influence of social modeling and social persuasion to the persons

performance.

Research Methodology

Research Design

This study will utilize the quantitative and qualitative research methods. The research

seeks to measure the level of self-efficacy of a student and their sources of self-efficacy which

are the Mastery of Experiences, Physical and Emotional States, Social Persuasion, and Social

Modeling. These four sources of self-efficacy affect the performance of a student in school.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted to selected students of Iligan Medical Center College

currently enrolled in A.Y 2021-2022.

Research Participants

The research study is intended for college students of Iligan Medical Center College

aged 17- 21 years old. At least 20 participants will be used for study about the level of self-

efficacy present to them in various areas. The respondents will be selected using the stratified

random sampling method.

Statistical Tool

The results showed that most students who have high self-efficacy are students that are

performing well in school and these students are usually scholar students while those students

who got low self-efficacy tend to perform not so well in school. Students who have high self-

efficacy tend to do their best to improve or to achieve their goals.
