In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, the usage of animals as an allegory for the

Russian Revolution is a way of showing similarities between humans and animals. His book
expresses how blindly following someone can sometimes lead to bad consequences, and that
sometimes equality is not what it seems at first.
Animal Farm shows that sometimes the way an idea is presented is vastly different from
what it is when put into practice. For example, when the animals are forced to work while the
pigs watched. “The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others.” (Orwell
27) The pigs, who preached about being equal with everyone else, decided to not actually work
for their rewards, like the milk that went missing earlier. Additionally, the pigs do many things
that make the animals feel like the line between human and pig has been blurred. Near the end,
the Commandments had been changed to a single one, “All animals are equal but some
animals are more equal than others” (Orwell 134) This quote reveals that the pigs finally
decided to make their true motives known, that it didn’t matter how much someone worked or
didn’t work at all, because all animals were equal, they all deserved the same.
In modern times, Communism, and Stalin’s efforts to make it work in Russia, are a
reminder that some equality is not really equality. “... even though the people in a Communist
system fully support its ideals, they soon start conducting themselves in a manner that shows
their deep yearning for the freedom of Capitalism.” (news24 6) This quote shows how
communists, after some time, want the freedom and equality of capitalism. It shows why
Communism is a failing ideal in the modern world. “All that communism does is provide for the
common man's basic needs, and no more. Communism test form of the incentive for anyone to
try harder and get most successful- satisfying the greater propensity for greed as compared to
their peers.” (news24 23) Another reason why communism is looked down upon in the modern
day is because it doesn’t do enough for people to satisfy their wants and needs.
In conclusion, the book Animal Farm, which is an allegory for the Russian Revolution,
uses the effects of communism well, by showing what happens when followers blindly do what
they are told, without thinking about it first. Communism in the present day also does not work
because it is unrealistic to expect people to do a set amount of work, and not work for more
incentives, since being “equal” does not always mean being truly equal.
