ABSTRACT

Landslide is a sudden downward movement of rock or soil mass movements on

slopes. It is the most common natural hazard in mountainous region and can
result in enormous damage to both property and life each year. When a
landslide occurs in an active communication network like Highway, Railways,
etc., the results will be disastrous. In Konkan railway there are 1998 Bridges,
(179-Major, 1819- minor) and 92 tunnels, more than 1000 cuttings in the track
and landslide due to excessive rainfall. During rainy seasons these steep slopes
without toe support, failure are occurred frequently. The common types of
failures are boulder falls, slides and slump etc., which blocks the
communication route (Railway line) and also damages the railway track.
Sometimes, it leads to fatal train accidents. So many times accidents due to
landslides were averted by the active warning systems like Inclinometers,
boulder nets, etc but the vulnerability to slope failures still exists. Hence it is
required to implement suitable site-specific control measures for to avoid any
failures in the future. The landslide hazard zonation is prepared by using
ArcGIS software by preparing various thematic maps like, geology, drainage,
slope, geomorphology, aspect etc. The output map is used to monitor immediate
trouble zone along the railway and to implement civil engineering mitigative
measures. Measures such as grouting and mitigation structures such as
cantilever retaining wall are found to be very efficient in prevention of both
natural and man-made landslides.
