Observation and Assessment Journal

Introduction

I have learned a lot in this course. I learned how to use better the "Know, What, How,

Read, Test, Quiz" evaluation and advised my partner during the review process. With this new

knowledge, I will have the confidence in my class to monitor and evaluate a child without

humility. I understand that observation and evaluation are essential for a child because they will

help their development field. I have seen in the program that the one I work for keeps a child

only if there is a problem with that child. My goal is to meet with my supervisor to explain why

we should monitor and evaluate all children, not just where we should be looking at ourselves.

Part 1: Reflective Practice

Demonstration practice is when a teacher uses information from a child's observation or

assessment to create a program that supports the child's interests and strengths. The teacher will

wonder how they can use the program in the curriculum to promote a positive outcome for the

child. There are three purposes for thinking. It is a process of self-improvement, group planning,

and continuous improvement of professional practices (Process that supports effective

curriculum planning, 2021). The first goal is to plan individually. This is when the teacher

creates a program for each child that they see or examine. The teacher can have a sheet with the

names of each child or each sheet on each child. The sheet will help the teacher plan the next

steps the child needs (Kelly, 2016). For example, a teacher could see a child throwing stones at a

container while counting each rock. The teacher will use this information and create a separate

program to help the child calculate individual communication.

Part 2: Topic – Proactive versus reactive assessment

It is essential to address the lack of testing and monitoring that can be done throughout

the process. I have noticed that the director has only one staff member who looks after the child

when the child has behavioral problems in the classroom. He says this will help determine if the

child is "imitating when." She will use the visuals to reunite with the family to determine how

the child is doing during class. I also noticed that children are only tested when the federation

wants an updated test of their file. My goal is to let the director know that all children need to be

monitored and evaluated, not just in personal care. The result will be that the director will

understand and make it mandatory for staff to use observation and assessment throughout the day

for each child.

Part 3: Analysis

My intentions are well-suited for development because the teacher will look after each

child in the class, not just the child "imitating." The teacher will use the information from the

observation and organize it according to the strengths and weaknesses of the child (DAP:

Observing, recording, and evaluating children's development and learning, 2021). The Code of

Conduct, section I 1.7, states, "Using information to assess the understanding and support of

children's development and learning, to support education, and to identify children who may

need additional assistance" (Code of Ethics and Commitment Statement, 2011). This means that

data from observation and assessment will help the teacher to support children's learning.

Part 4: Next Steps

I plan to take the following steps to apply effective monitoring and evaluation to the

system:

1. I will request a meeting with the director and colleagues to discuss the importance of

monitoring and evaluation throughout the process.

2. I will apply the lessons learned to the meeting, such as planning reflection and the

information cycle.

3. I will present the details of the NAEYC DAP and Code of Conduct at the Conference.

Part 5: Reflection

I feel that the outcome of this meeting will be helpful to the director and his colleagues.

Some partners may not know how to look after the children properly, so this meeting will help

them learn how to do it. After the meeting, I was able to use demonstration methods to make sure

that everyone present understood that children needed to be seen more than "because they need

them." If anyone has more questions, I will be there to help him. I want the best result for this

meeting as much as possible.

Part 6: Communication of Results

I will present the review and evaluation topics throughout the program at the staff

meeting. During the meeting, I will have a PowerPoint presentation and a copy for everyone to

follow. I chose this method of communication because it is visible and informative.

In conclusion, observation and assessment should not be limited to children with

behavioral problems or because the teacher should" do it. It needs to be done everywhere, so the

teacher will know what to do with the child and find a way to help him move on. The teacher can

work with families and understand the child's background, which will help plan the child's

development.
