Poker Chip Questions

1.What did you find most interesting about the information presented in the video? Why?

The most interesting thing that I found about the video is how he uses poker chips to explain and
compare a child's self-esteem. Children with learning disabilities are at greater risk of having a
poor sense of academic self-concept as this is the area in which they experience the most
difficulty. This often leads to negative attitudes, discrimination, and exclusion, which can
contribute to decreased self-worth. He explained how a disabled child can feel when he doesn't
want to do something, and parents don't understand how to see it that way. The reason why is
because low self-esteem is associated with children with learning disabilities. Due to academic
challenges, labeled as slow learners and experiencing rejection from their peers. The goal is to
set the child up for life no matter if you are a parent or a teacher.

2. How will what you viewed change or influence your teaching style or techniques? Provide at
least 3 detailed examples.

1.Praise and acknowledge accomplishments.

Praise can have a powerful effect on kids who learn and think differently. It can empower and
motivate them to keep trying hard. And it can fuel them to find strategies to overcome
challenges. Highlights kids’ natural abilities, like intelligence or a talent for playing the piano.
It’s the kind of praise we often use to express affection. For example, you might say, “You have
such a beautiful singing voice.”

2.Embrace a growth mindset.

We have to be intentional to focus on the positive. To focus on each and every victory, no matter
how small it may seem.

3.Don't compare one child to another.

It's never good to compare one child with another. It's always good and important to
acknowledge a child on its own so they see their being noticed. Parents of more than one child
will often make that mistake. They start to say how each of their children came into the world as
a fully formed personality. In addition to such comparisons being misleading and irrelevant, they
can also be deeply harmful to your child's sense of self.
3.Describe 2 implications/connections to special education that can be made from the
information presented?

Knowledge of one's own style will also help the learner to learn in his/her way using his/her best
strategies for learning. Knowledge of learning styles will help the teacher in delivering effective
presentations to diverse learners in the class. Teacher can determine what is best for the students.
The goal is to access the general education classroom and curriculum that is important, and the
various professionals who work with students with disabilities.

4.How would you identify these students in your group and what strategies/techniques would
you use with them?

The way that I can identify these students in the room is because some kids stand out more than
others. Our special needs children have some different behaviors, and some tend to be very loud.
Strategies that you can use is to make group activities to engage all students and make them feel
the same. Teachers should incorporate motivating tasks and time for enjoyment and activities to
make children feel integrated. Students can also participate in group activities based on their
interests.
