ASSEMBLE STUDIO
Assemble is a multi-disciplinary collective
working across architecture, design and art.

Founded in 2010 to undertake a single self-built

project, Assemble has since delivered a diverse
body of work, whilst retaining a democratic
working method that enables built, social and
research-based work at a variety of scales.

Assemble is a workspace provider for designers,

fabricators and artists. They design, build and
manage workspace and shared workshop
facilities with the aim to enable and support
collaboration across disciplines.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
BRIDPORT HOUSING was a propositional research project looking at new forms of community-led
housing provision for rural and semi-rural contexts.

The aim was to design housing types that could take advantage of local technologies, skills and
resources to provide relatively affordable but good quality and ecologically considerate homes.
PAIN POINTS
The housing problem in Dorset varies from
different perspectives from the policy context
to the problems of the supply chain.

The main problems faced by the studio were

firstly the crowd was a mixed rural crowd.
Thus pleasing them in the construction
process without deforming the public relations
was a task.

Also the local site context was filled with trees

so building amidst the green and not creating
a concrete jungle was equally important.
WHAT IF

➔ What if use local resources for Affordable

living
➔ What if design a Co-housing community
➔ What if provide an Access to share common
resources
➔ What if provide Large green open space for
community food growing and other leisure
activities
➔ What if provide Car parking
DESIGN CONCEPT
The types of design strategies they explored
developed a prototypical construction method
that would enable the houses to be built
ecologically using largely local materials and
skill.

This vastly helped in the context of helping the

rural locals in understanding the construction
process without cumbersome details.

They even took help from the locals in reference

to the material studio i.e building from cob.

They designed free streets with giving parking

area which later, could also be used as a informal
public space for interaction.
