POLYMERS
TENSILE FABRIC STRUCTURES
DOWNTOWN SUMMERLIN RETAIL
CENTER
■ Location: Summerlin, NV
■ The project features a massive fabric
surface area of approximately 59,775
square feet of both PTFE and ETFE
materials in two of the four “districts” that
make up the mixed-use retail center. But
the project is especially impressive
because of the complex steel fabrication
required to distribute the load.
MATERIALS
■ Fabricated PTFE architectural membrane;
white for main structure.
■ Fabricated ETFE film w/ “gray” printed frit.
Used at the tip of the main canopy.
■ Finish painted structural steel for whole
structure.
■ Stainless steel cables for Main Cone Canopy
Cone Top Cable Net.
JOINERIES
■ design is a uniquely large compression ring making up
the main canopy. Most compression rings are round,
but the conical shape of the Summerlin Shops main
canopy called for an oval shape creating extremely
large trusses, which created many lay down challenges
at the manufacturing facility and a complicated fit-up
on site.
■ the compound curvature of the steel that makes up
several freestanding fabric structures resembling
graceful tail-less flying bat rays in the sky, required
extensive rolling and fit-up, because every steel section
had a different shape. It’s interesting to note that when
viewing these particular structures from below, the
grid-like steel was more for aesthetics than required to
support the membrane.
ALLIANZ FIELD STADIUM
■ Location: Saint Paul, MN
■ it is a building characterized by a futuristic external surface formed by cusions in ETFE, a recycleable, non
deformable and long lasting material
■ Allianz Field is a 19,400-seat capacity soccer stadium built in Saint Paul, Minnesota, for Minnesota United
FC, the city’s Major League Soccer club. The $250 million stadium was designed by the renowned sports
architecture firm, Populous, with assistance from engineering firm Walter P Moore. The stadium features a
brilliantly simple design consisting of a membrane façade wrapped around the undulating steel framework.
The completed building has a sleek, modern aesthetic that appears quite different from day to night.
CONSTRUCTION
■ work on the stadium involved the fabrication and
installation of the 93,540 square foot tensile
membrane façade. The membrane wrapping around
the stadium is a uniquely developed PTFE
membrane material that reflects sunlight and
appears silver during daylight hours yet appears
translucent at night. The steel support structure
behind the building envelope includes 1,700
embedded computer-controlled LED lights capable
of displaying dynamic light shows on the membrane
façade.
