Question:1
In order to effectively manage up, what things should
Grace understand about herself?
• Grace has a passion for change, exploring new areas in her field,
innovation, and progression but at the same time lacks of
controlling her emotions. After facing rejection from her boss
Landon, she made a diligent decision take her matter to a higher
authority. Doing this, Landon was frustrated, as she was not
following the instructions and direction of her manager. By this
behavior, Grace will be seen as an employee that causes conflict
and not be viewed as a team player.
• As Grace is a part of organization, she should be creating value for
herself, her boss and company. But she only tries to create value
for herself, she only thought of her promotion, getting big projects
so that she could stand out among her fellow mates.
• At last, the of this case also mentions that subordinates should
understand their own personal style of Management in contrast
with the superior’s. Grace should understand her boss and his
leadership style. London is more focused on playing by the rules
and following directions from experts.
• Grace has been part of this organization only for 15 months and
also at junior level position thus she has to learn a lot about
leadership skills more.
• She needs to learn to follow the protocol of the organization,
directly getting in touch with Landon’s manager will put him in
problem; his manager might think that Landon is not capable of
handling such situations.
Question:2
In order to effectively manage up, what things should
Grace understand about herself?
• One of the vital qualities of good leader is the way of
communication. Grace should understand Landon’s preferred
method of communication. As seen in the case, Landon would
always call her into office to sit down and chat. In the case when,
Grace annoyed a long-term customer, Landon stepped in to solve
the problem, after, he called Grace into his office to give feedback
on how to improve with customer relations.
• Landon has always motivated and supported Grace from the start
of her journey in this organization and also when Landon rejects
her plan, Landon preferred towards face-to-face communication
because it allows for real time feedback.
• Grace should understand about Landon’s strengths, more
specifically his mentorship. The case portrays Landon as a mentor
to Grace. With his 8 years working for 8SK, Landon is a great
mentor by helping her the ins and outs to advance her career.
However, Grace overlooks his experience and expertise when
Landon doesn’t buy into her plans for upgrading the software.
• Finally, the case depicts that, ‘The most important Leadership
Competencies, according to leaders around the world’, focuses on
how leaders should show openness to new ideas and foster
organization learning. Landon is opposite of this idea and Grace
should understand this about her boss, his leadership style.
Landon is more focused on rules and direction of experts. In the
case, Landon mentioned that only IT can make those types
changes, and if it is not needed, Landon will accept.
• In terms of foster organizational learning, Landon also falls behind
because he believes that junior employee should not be pitching
ideas of big change across the organization.
