COURSE AIMS

The course aims to equip management students with an enhanced clarity of understanding the
macroscopic aspects like organizational structures with its sub aspects like formalization,
centralization complexity etc. Hence it becomes very important to understand organizational
structures and its sub dimensions, types- its co relations with other aspects like innovation,
project type, size of the organization,types of industries whether manufacturing or non
manufacturing with specific strategic orientation like MNC ,global or international each of
which will be dealt- in depth in this course.

Teaching Methods – The main objective of this course will be to attenuate the students with
important concepts relating to organizational structure and for a better understanding of the
concept of organization itself. Classes will be held on a interactive manner.

This class introduces the concept of organisation and reviews the main aspects in the

2. Organizational structure Key dimensions


Early research on organizational structure, important concepts pertaining to organizational
structures namely centralization, complexity, formalization including types of complexity-
difference in understanding of complexity between manufacturing and non manufacturing
industries .Correlation between the different types of complexity with formalization and
centralization in certain manufacturing and non manufacturing industries..Difficulty in
understanding structuring just by understanding the above aspects.

3. Organizational structure and its various correlates

Correlates include Technology, Size,( Problems with size and structure ) ,Combined effect
of Size and technology. Need for Matrix ,Efficacy of Matrix . Need for other
theories.Organisational designing for Manufacturing Industries. Difference between basic
and other forms of Manufacturing namely Sequential and reciprocal with respect to shop
floor designing.

4. Structure and Innovation (Study material will be provided)

Optimally inductive structures for innovation. Organic –Mechanistic structures. Need for
Thompsons model. Its efficacy, Skunk Work approach, Project Champion.Up stream Down
Stream.Organisational forms relating to multinational,global and International firms and reasons
with respect to strategic Orientation.
3 sessions

5) Keiratsu Zaibatsu and other Organisational Forms

Uniqueness pertaining to this Structures.Strategic efficiency and cost control relating to finance
and operations. Role of suppliers in Horizontal and Vertical Kieratsu.

2 Sessions

It will be a 1.5 credit course.

A case can be provided (Tentative)

Note-This is a concept based subject. Students are advised to be attentive. Evaluation will be
done by surprise tests along with the final exam.
