Naturalistic Intelligence

This document discusses activities to teach naturalistic intelligence. The activities included having students 1) place animal pictures on a world map according to the animals' habitats and 2) work in groups to guess the contents of mystery boxes containing natural materials and then visualize the contents through art. The implications are that the activities help students use their naturalistic intelligence to transmit feelings about nature through drawing. Suggestions for improvement include doing more activities outdoors and having students create art using natural materials like leaves and tree bark.

NATURALISTIC INTELLIGENCE

Naturalistic intelligence is one of researcher Howard Garner's nine multiple

intelligences. This particular intelligence that involves how sensitive an individual is to nature

and the world. People who excel in this intelligence typically are interested in growing plants,

taking care of animals or studying animal or plants. For example, mostly those who have a

high naturalist intelligence are most likely zookeepers, biologist, gardeners and

veterinarians. According to

HOW THE ACTIVITY IS CARRIED OUT

The activities started out with self-introduction by each group member which consists

with five members. Then we also conduct a set induction before we starting the activities by

display an iguana. Then, we start giving an instruction about the activities that we going to

do that day. There are two types of activities that we have prepared for students first is

‘‘Where Am I From’’ and second is ‘‘Who Am I’’.

The first activities is ‘‘Where Am I From’’ and every student must pick one animal that

we prepared for them and they need put the animal according to their original habitat on the

world map that we created for them as they have an affinity for natural habitats such as

forests, deserts, oceans/lakes or streams, wetlands . Then, the second activities is ‘‘Who Am

I’’ , a group activity that allow them to form three person in each group and they need to work

together to guess what inside the mystery box and each group will be given a different

content, texture and naturalistic character. After they guess the content in the box they need

to visualize it through any types of art form including, paper origami, sketch, and drawing.
Table 1.0

Table 1.0 shows content in mysterious box that our group provided to students do

‘Who Am I’ activities. During the activity we strictly instruct them to wear plastic glove to

prevent by touching directly the nature content that we prepared for them and also as a

precautions for their safety in term of hygiene.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE ACTIVITY WITH ART IMPLEMENTATION

The implications of activities with art implementation that we conduct during that day

are, we can know which student is more naturalistic and how they can implement the

naturalistic feeling into art by drawing and sketches , based on what they have touch and

feel. Furthermore, they are able to drawing on what they have touched and used their

naturalistic intelligence to transmit on what is it based on their memory and experience.

SUGGESTION / IMPROVEMENT OF THE ACTIVITIES

The improvement that we can made for the future is fully utilize the material that we

bring to the class and create more art activity that involving naturalistic that helps student

understanding toward nature and art . Teaching in the actual environment give them real

way of learning in naturalistic and more interesting with the natural existence through their

sensory including, touch, feel, smell, taste and hear. For example, when we bring and

teaching them outside of the class, they will discover the nature more than they learning

inside classroom. The student will enjoy exploring and touching outdoors, including "yucky

things".

In addition, the useful of natural things in teaching art should be more expand and involving

every student in class. The naturalistic art teaching and learning can be a great combination

when the useful of natural things into art subject. For example, the students are ask to draw

an animals and have pattern on their body resemble to their actual skin , so that leaves and

tree barks can be used for the students to discover the pattern by sketch using pencil or

crayon on the things. The pattern will appear and useful for making actual skin for the

animals. Naturalistic stud

entOther is example create an nature friendly types of colour that student can explore by

'DIY' their own colour using coffee, fruits, spice and more that helps their understanding the

characteristic of each nature that exist in our world.
