INTRODUCTION

Owusu-Acheaw and Larson(2015) have suggested in the article that students who
spend time on social media have negatively impacted their academic results.
Networking has taken up their time thus taking up their study time. This causes
students to rush through study sessions and assignments. They prioritize
networking over academics.

3
USE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING AND ACADEMIC
RESULTS

As claimed by the authours of the article (Owusu-Acheaw and Larson,2015: 99)

students don’t know how to manage their time. They spend between thirty minutes
and three hours daily on social networks. This time can be utilized for academic
growth. Students need to spend time reading and improving their academic growth.

ACADEMIC ASSIGNMENT….

2. Social networking can be used to communicate and distribute data. The high
demand and growth of social websites has changed the way we behave. ‘In
person contact’ is no more, as social networking users prefer the web.
Relationships have changed because of this. Communication mediums have
improved( Asur and Huberman, 2010, cited in Owusu-Acheaw and
Larson,2015: 94).

3. Lenhart et.al (2010, cited in Owusu-Acheaw and Larson,2015: 95) states that
many personal profiles on social networks belong to fifty seven percent of users
between eighteen and twenty-nine years old.

4. Kubey et al (2010, cited in Owusu-Acheaw and Larson,2015: 96) suggest the

decline in educational ability and internet reliance are interconnected.

5. ‘Based on the findings, the researchers made some recommendations as follows;

Students with phones having internet facility should be encouraged to either
use it to supplement their research in the library rather than the usual
chatting with friends all the time’ (Owusu-Acheaw & Larson, 2015 :99).

‘Students should be advised to limit the time they spend on social media sites per
day and encourage them to rather substitute those hours to read novels and
relevant academic books to improve their knowledge’ (Owusu-Acheaw &
Larson,2015:99).

5
‘Since the study confirmed that the use of social media sites had affected the
academic performance of students negatively, there is the urgent need for the
introduction of students to the availability of novels and other information
resource or materials in the library that can help them academically’ (Owusu-
Acheaw & Larson, 2015: 99-100).

CONCLUSION

I found that the article ‘Use of Social Media and its Impact on Academic Performance of
Tertiary Institutions Students: A Study of Students of Koforidua Polytechnic, Ghana’
( M.Owusu-acheaw & A.G.Larson ,2015) was subjective .There is always negative
and positive to technology use. It depends on the users. The improvement of social
media could build relationships. Some students use social media as a platform for
study groups e.g. WhatsApp. Discussions can take place here which is so much
easier and quicker than meeting in person. The article focuses on social media been
time consuming but it all depends on how the user utilizes this medium.
