LASER SAFETY
1
1.1. LASER TYPES

There are different types of lasers according to the medium of photon

propagation (gas, solid, liquid, etc.) contained inside the laser tube and the
excitation mechanism used to cause the laser process. As a result, laser
emissions of different wavelengths (λ), energy content and power are
obtained. The risks from exposure to laser emission are different for each type
of laser. According to the features mentioned above, lasers are categorized
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

into 4 classes and their Accessible Emission Limit (AEL) is specified as follows.

■ Class I. Lasers which are inherently safe or safe due to their design.

■ Class II. Low output power devices which give out visible emission
(400nm ≤ λ ≤ 700nm) and can work in continuous or pulsed mode.
For exposure times up to 0.25 seconds, the output power of these
systems is limited to the AEL of Class I. For exposure times longer
than 0.25, the limit is 1mW.

■ Class IIIA. Continuous emission lasers that have an output power of

up to 5mW or five times the Class II limit for pulsed and swept
lasers. Regarding the remaining spectral ranges, emission should not
exceed five times the AEL of Class I.

■ Class IIIB. Continuous emission lasers cannot exceed 0.5W and the
emission exposure to pulsed lasers must be less than 105 Jm-2.

■ Class IV. High power devices which exceed the AEL of Class IIIB.

1-1
1.2. LASER SAFETY STANDARDS

The laser marking system is fitted with basic safety features at the points
where there might be risk of laser emission if the allowed AEL limit is
exceeded.

The laser marking system is equipped with a protective casing which, except
for the laser aperture, prevents human access to laser emission exceeding
Class I.

Any part of the laser protective casing which, when removed or

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5
replaced to be repaired, would imply exposure to excessive
emission, requires the use of tools. This prevents exposure to
excessive laser emission in relation to the assigned AEL limit. The
safety interlock is designed to prevent the removal of the panel
until the accessible emission values are lower than the AEL of the
assigned class.

NOTE: Laser marking system protection covers can only be removed

by using tools.

Class IIIB and IV lasers (except for those of Class IIIB which do not exceed five
times the Class II AEL limit at a wavelength of 400nm to 700nm) will emit an
audible or visual warning when the power source is activated.

The beam emitted by any Class II, IIIA, IIIB or IV laser product should end its
effective path in a diffused reflection material with suitable reflectivity and
thermal properties, or an absorbent material. Whenever possible, the laser
beam open path must be located either above or below eye level.

NOTE: The final path of the laser beam should end at some diffused
reflectivity element.

Mirrors, lenses and beam splitters should be tightly mounted and subject to
controlled movements during laser emission to prevent accidental specular
reflection of the emission coming from Class IIIB or IV laser products.

There are risk control procedures for each class of laser:

■ Classes IIA and IIIA. They only require precautions to prevent

direct, continuous view of the beam. Momentary exposure
due to accidental viewing is not considered dangerous.

■ Class IIIB. These are considered hazardous when the naked eye
is exposed to the direct beam or specular reflection. In order
to prevent these situations, the following precautions must be
taken:

1-2
1

LASER SAFETY
1. The beam must be used in a controlled area.

2. The beam must end its useful path at a diffused material with a suitable
colour and reflectivity that allows the beam to be positioned while
minimizing the risk of reflection.

3. In the absence of the conditions specified in point 2, eye protection must

be worn.

■ Class IV. These may produce injuries caused by the direct

beam or its specular and diffused reflections. They also
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

involve fire risk. In addition to the precautions mentioned in

the previous section, the following should also be used:

1. The laser system must be installed, adjusted and operated only by

qualified, trained and authorized personnel.

2. The area where the laser marking system will be operating must be
identified with a suitable warning sign (supplied by MACSA ID, S.A.).

3. The beam and incidence area must be surrounded by a material resistant

to the wavelength emitted by the laser in order to avoid specular
reflection in the invisible spectrum due to the far infrared laser emission.

4. The presence of people in the beam path must be avoided in order to

prevent exposure to emission or specular reflections.

5. Carbon plates or other sufficiently thick refractory materials must be

installed at the end of the beam path. Nevertheless, some precautions
must be taken, as the surface of these materials can vitrify after lengthy
exposure, causing specular reflection.

6. Whenever possible, the beam path must be located either above or below
eye level.

In spite of all the safety elements included in the laser marking system and all
the precautions to be observed, the laser marking system end user should wear
safety goggles that completely cover the eyes when operating the system, in
order to avoid any injury caused by specular emission. It is also advisable to
wear cotton clothing, which is much more resistant to this kind of emission.

Each country establishes its own safety standards concerning the sales and
distribution of laser products. All of them are quite similar.

1-3
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In this country, the standards which regulate the use of Class IV laser products
concerning labeling and safety interlocks must be observed.

LASER SAFETY
MAKING TOP COVER

The dimensions of this cover can vary depending on the marking head position,
the production line width and the height of the products to be marked.

So, the length of this part will be:

Length = (2 x desired casing height) + (production line width)

Steps to follow:
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

1. Cut a piece of polycarbonate/aluminium, according to the

dimensions specified above, using a jig saw.
2. Polish the edges of the top cover.
3. Mark the position where this part needs to be folded.
4. Make cuts (using the jig saw) at the edges where the piece will
be folded.
5. Place the area that will be folded over a thermic resistor
(avoiding contact with it).
6. Fold the side to form a right-angle with the horizon.
7. Using a jig saw, make an opening where the focus lens will be
inserted.
8. Polish the edges of the opening.

In order to have access to the marking area, a hinge should be mounted

between this cover and the rear cover. In this case, it is necessary to use a
safety interlock switch to disable the laser when the cover is opened.

MAKING THE RIGHT SIDE

Steps to follow:

1. Take measurements from the right side of the protective

casing.
2. Using a jig saw, cut a piece Polycarbonate/ aluminium to the
above measurements.
3. Cut an opening in accordance with the dimensions of the
products to be marked.
4. Polish the edges of this piece with a polisher.

This side should be attached to the metal support with screws.

MAKING THE LEFT SIDE

Follow the same steps set forth in the previous paragraph.

Make an opening to attach the fume vent.

LASER SAFETY
1.3.2. GENERAL HAZARDS

Below are general descriptions of hazards and unsafe practices that could
result in serious personal injury and even death. Specific precautions and alerts
that do not appear in this section are found throughout the instruction manual.

1.3.3. POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY WARNING

This product emits infrared radiation at a wavelength of 10.6µm or

1.06 µm. Direct or indirect exposure to laser radiation may cause
serious damage to the cornea, therefore it is mandatory to wear
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

protective viewing goggles in areas exposed to the laser beam.

Goggles protect against scattered radiation but do not protect
against direct viewing of the beam or reflections from metal
surfaces. Protective goggles that block 10.6 µm CO2 or 1.06 µm YAG
laser radiation are available from MACSA ID, S.A.

RADIATION VIEWING CONDITIONS

The laser exiting the resonator is considered an intense monochromatic light

source. Due to these features it can be seen as a source of high luminosity.

This means that its image is focused on the retina at a point of high-density
power. If the beam diverges and is dispersed on a non-reflective screen, then
there would be an “extended view” of the image, with a decisively less
dangerous power density. So there are different types of radiation views based
on the access to the radiation and consequently different degrees of danger.

Direct view of the Laser beam:

This type of view is the most dangerous and can occur at the exit of the laser
aperture after having removed the lens. It must be avoided! Use of protective
goggles is not sufficient to protect against direct view of the beam.

Direct view of the beam after mirror reflection:

This may occur by directing the beam towards a reflective surface.

Viewing a beam reflected off a flat surface is very dangerous and the same as
direct viewing.

Direct view of the beam after focusing:

This occurs if the laser beam is not extinguished with an appropriate absorbent
at the end of its useful path. Viewing the beam is dangerous up to a
considerable distance.

1-9
Dispersive viewing of the beam after focusing:

This is the most frequent viewing condition during laser system operation.
Viewing the beam up close is dangerous, but appropriate filters and goggles
can ensure safety, even during prolonged exposure.

The Optical Risk Nominal Distance (O.R.N.D.) for laser systems of MACSA ID,
S.A. can be over 20m for direct or reflected radiation, and over 1m for
Dispersive radiation.

Only goggles with an Optical Density (O.D.) over 4 can momentarily protect
the eyes against accidental viewing of damaging laser radiation.

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5
Always use goggles with a conformity certificate.
Remember that no goggles can provide prolonged protection from
direct radiation.

If exposed to intense laser radiation, even briefly, or to less intensity but

longer duration, both the cornea and the retina can be burned and irreparably
and permanently damaged.

Direct exposure to focused radiation can burn the skin. In addition, it is

necessary to bear in mind that there may be collateral ultraviolet radiation
along with the main radiation. Prolonged exposure may cause skin cancer.

Enclose the beam path whenever possible. Direct or diffused laser radiation
can seriously burn humans or animals.

U.S. customers should refer to and follow the laser safety precautions in ANSI
Z136.1-1993, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers. Procedures
listed under the Standard include the appointment of a Laser Safety Officer,
operation of the product in an area of limited access by trained personnel,
servicing of laser system only by trained and authorized personnel, and posting
of signs warning of the potential hazards.

European customers should refer to and follow the laser safety precautions in
EN 60825-1, Radiation Safety of Laser Products, Equipment Classification,
Requirements, and User Guide.

Materials processing can generate air contaminants such as

vapours, fumes, and/or particles that may be noxious, toxic, or
even fatal. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for materials being
processed should be thoroughly evaluated and the adequacy of
provisions for fume extraction, filtering and venting should be
carefully considered. Review the following references for further
information on exposure criteria:

Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).

It may be necessary to consult local governmental agencies regarding

restrictions on the ventilation of processing vapours.

1.3.4. POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY

Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those

specified herein may result in hazardous exposure.

1.4. COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATIONS AND LAW

The Laser System is subject to several United States and European Union (EU)
directives. These directives impose product performance requirements related
to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and product safety features for laser
products. The associated directives and specific provisions to which the laser
marking system must comply are identified and described in the following
paragraphs.

1.4.1. CDRH REQUIREMENTS

MACSA ID, S.A. laser marking system is designed to comply with requirements
for Class IV laser products imposed by the Radiation Control for Health and
Safety Act of 1968. Under this act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
issued a performance standard in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) for
laser products. This performance standard (21 CFR, Part 1040.10) was
developed to protect public health and safety by imposing requirements upon
manufacturers of laser products to provide an indication of the presence of
laser radiation, to provide the user with certain means to control radiation,
and to assure that all personnel are adequately warned of potential hazards
through the use of product labels and instructions.

Federal regulations require that all laser products manufactured on or after

August 2, 1976 must be certified as complying with the performance standard.
The manufacturer must demonstrate the product’s compliance with the
standard prior to certification or introduction of the product in the market by
filing reports pertaining to the radiation safety of the product and the
associated quality control program to the Center for Devices and Radiological
Health (CDRH). Failure to provide the required reports or product certification
is a violation of Section 360B of the Radiation Control and Health and Safety
Service Act of 1968.

Product features included in the design of the laser marking system to comply
with CDRH requirements are built into the system as control panels or
indicators, internal circuit elements, or input/output signal interfaces.
Specifically, these features include a key switch, Laser and Ready indicators,

1 - 11
emergency stop button, remote interlock, and a five-second delay between
power on (Ready indicator) and operation of the laser. Table 1 summarizes the
laser marking system product features, indicating type and description, and
which features are required by CDRH regulations.

Common safe operating practices should be exercised at all times

when the laser is in use. To prevent exposure to direct or diffused
laser radiation, follow all safety precautions specified in this
instruction manual. The use of controls or adjustments or
performance of procedures other than those specified herein may
result in exposure to hazardous invisible laser radiation, damage
to, or malfunction of the laser. Severe burns may result from

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5
direct exposure to the laser beam. Always wear safety goggles with
side shields to reduce the risk of damage to the eyes when
operating the laser.

Safe operation of the laser requires the use of an external beam

block to safely block the beam from travelling beyond the desired
work area. Use a firebrick or similar non-dispersive, non-
combustible material as the block. NEVER use organic material or
metals as the beam blocker. Organic materials, in general, are
combustible and metals act as reflectors that may create an area
of immediate danger.

1.4.2. UNITED STATES FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The United States Communications Act of 1934 vested the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC) with the authority to regulate laser systems
that emits electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency spectrum. The
purpose of the Communication Act was to prevent harmful electromagnetic
interference (EMI) from affecting authorized radio communication services in
the frequency range above 9 kHz.

1.4.3. UNITED STATES FCC REQUIREMENTS

The FCC regulations that govern laser system are fully described in 47 CFR. The
marking systems have been tested and found to comply by proving
performance features that have met or exceeded the requirements of 47 CFR,
Part 15.

and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual,
may cause disruptive interference.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

1.4.5. EUROPEAN UNION REQUIREMENTS

The Laser Marking System should be installed and operated at prepared

facilities and by duly trained personnel. Due to the considerable risks and
hazards associated with the installation and operation this device with its built-
in laser, the manufacturer must provide appropriate product warning labels
and instructions to ensure safety. MACSA ID, S.A. assumes no responsibility for
the compliance of the system into which the Laser Marking System is installed,
other than to supply and/or recommend components complying with CE
standards and European Directives.

Pursuant to Article 1, paragraphs 2 and article 3 of the Machinery Directive,

2006/42/CE, the Machinery Directive does not apply to this system. Concerning
the incorporation of the laser marking system into equipment that may fall
under the definition of Machinery, MACSA ID, S.A. considers the application of
the EMC Directive and Low voltage directive as sufficient evidence that the
laser marking system will not compromise the compliance of the Machinery
into which it is incorporated.

The following hazards would be typical for this product when incorporated for
intended use:

a) Risk of injury when lifting or moving the unit.

b) Risk of exposure to hazardous laser energy through unauthorized
removal of access panels, doors, or protective barriers.
c) Risk of exposure to hazardous laser energy and injury due to failure of
personnel to use proper eye protection and/or failure to adhere to
applicable laser safety procedures.
d) Generation of hazardous air contaminants that may be noxious, toxic, or
even fatal.

With respect to instances of electromagnetic interference, MACSA ID, S.A.

defines marking variations to be an unacceptable loss of performance, as long
as the following criteria are met: (1) There is no damage to the marking
equipment, or machinery into which it is integrated, (2) The marking variation
does not cause a hazardous or unsafe condition, (3) The marking variation is

1 - 13
apparent to the operator, and (4) Normal operation is recovered after removal
of the interfering signal.

A report of EU service requirements pertaining to the laser marking system is

shown below.

SAFETY OF LASER PRODUCTS APPLICATION GUIDE

The European Norm (EN) document EN 60825-1 was developed to protect

persons from laser radiation by imposing requirements upon manufacturers of
laser products to provide an indication of laser radiation; to classify laser
products according to the degree of hazard; to require both user and
manufacturer to establish procedures so that proper precautions are adopted;
to ensure adequate warning of the hazards associated with accessible radiation
through signs, labels, and instructions; to improve control of laser radiation
through protective features; and to provide safe usage of laser products by
specifying user control measures.

The marking system is designed to comply with the requirements set forth in
EN 60825-1. Table 1 summarizes the marking system features, indicating the
type and description of these features and whether those features are required
by European Union regulations.

ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY APPLICATION GUIDE

The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2004/108/CE is the

Directive developed to address electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues in
electronic laser system. In particular, the Directive requires documents that
define the emission and immunity standards for specific product categories.
For the laser marking system, standard EN 61000-3-2:2006 defines the RF
emissions limit. Generic standard EN 61000-6-2:2006 defines immunity
requirements published by the International Electromechanical Commission
(IEC).

1 - 14
1

LASER SAFETY
The requirement to comply with required EMC regulations is due to the
increasing use of powerful electronic devices, which because of the techniques
used, are the source of disturbances in a wide range of frequencies (emission);
at the same time they are also affected by disturbances produced by other
devices and thus require an adequate level of immunity.

1. Disturbances are normally classified as low frequency (0 < f < 9 kHz) and
high frequency (f > 9 kHz). Low frequency phenomena, which are
particularly important, are those connected to harmonic frequencies and
electrical frequencies. There are other widespread phenomena such as
electrostatic discharge in air or by contact.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5

2. Disturbances can be transmitted via conductors (conducted disturbances in

a field ranging from 0.15 MHz to 30 MHz) and via irradiation (irradiated
disturbances ranging from 30 MHz to 1000 MHz).

3. Case studies in industrial environments point to conducted disturbances as

the main cause of failure to comply with electromagnetic compatibility. For
this reason, installation of a laser system must be carried out according to
the instructions below.

Connections and wiring. Laser system connections to other devices and

external sources must be made taking into account criteria of minimizing
electro magnetic influences between them. Power circuit wiring must be
physically separated from command and control (signal circuit) circuits. This is
done using metal channels, protective mesh or protective screens.

Filter devices. All laser system, which requires supplementary devices to

comply with EMC regulations, must be equipped with such devices, assembled
according the manufacturer instructions. Supplementary devices include RC
units to mount parallel to AC relay coils, diodes to mount parallel to DC relay
coils, filters for high frequency conducted disturbance to be mounted on the
network input (ask Macsa for the most suitable type).

Wire shielding. Wire shielding must end as close to the incoming terminal
boards as possible.

Metal panels. All the panels which make up the system must be interconnected
to that they present low impedance to high frequencies. This is obtained by
adding numerous screws between the unpainted covers or using non-anodized
aluminium. All the metal parts are connected with a good ground connection.

In applications where disturbances exceed legal limits, there may

be disturbances and interferences between the laser system and
other appliances, despite correct conformance with installation
rules.

If there are interferences with another laser system, do not use it

at the same time, or move the two devices further apart.

1 - 15
GUIDE FOR APPLYING LOW VOLTAGE SAFETY

The laser marking system complies with Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/CE
concerning electrical equipment operating at voltages between 50 and 1000
VAC. Warning labels and shields for protecting the user are required. The laser
marking system installation should be evaluated to ensure that it complies with
the requirements laid down in the Directives on Low Voltage.

1. Installation: Only professionally trained individuals can carry out

installation work, connect the external power source and, in general,
perform any type of work on the electrical part. . Dangerous voltage is
present inside the Laser source.

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 3.0.5
2. Power cut-off device. Since the laser system is designed to be incorporated
in a system including other equipment it is necessary to install a manually
controlled power cut-off device common to the entire system. This is the
installer’s responsibility.

3. Stop function. Since the laser system is designed to be incorporated in a

system including other equipment, it is necessary to create a category O
stop common to the entire system. This is the installer’s responsibility.

4. Emergency stop. Since the laser system is designed to be incorporated in a

system including other equipment, the emergency stop must be installed
based on the technical specifications of the system, bearing in mind that it
may be necessary in some equipment to let cooling water circulate for a
few seconds before disconnecting power. The emergency function is the
installer’s responsibility.

5. Protection category. Most MACSA Laser Systems have a minimum protection

category of IP20. To comply with the Machine Directive and Standard EN
60204, the installer is responsible for placing them in a suitable container
according to the protection category required for the end use.

6. Ground Protection. One of the three conductors of the electrical supply is

grounded, meaning it has no electrical power. This wire must always be
connected to the laser.

The main reason for use of a ground connection between the laser and the
electricity is the safety of individuals, and the second is to protect the
system.

In terms of operating safety, the ground connection helps prevent the

occurrence of dangerous voltage between parts that are accessible at the
same time, up to frequencies for which the ground connection (solely
designed for the safety of individuals) can be considered low impedance.

Therefore, at high frequencies (over a few tens of MHz) the impedance of

the ground connection is completely unpredictable, and there is no
guarantee of protection at high frequencies.

2.3.3. SCREENS

The laser system reports its status via different screens according to the user
interface that is in use.

Touch Screen

The first step is to start the system by pressing the ON button on the laser
system. When you turn on the laser system, wait a few seconds before
accessing the main screen. During this time a start screen is displayed, which
shows a progress bar for the start-up process.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0

Once the Touch Screen has initialised, a set of buttons appears, which will take
the user to other screens with parameters, lists, etc., where he can configure
the laser system, create a message or print any messages in the laser CPU.

A password is required to access the "SETUP" and "MESSAGE" options of the

main screen. Without this password it is not possible to modify any parameters.
The Print option does not require a password.

2 -5
There are four basic types of screens on the Touch Screen user interface.

• Menu pages or configuration screens

• Screens for information entered by the user
• Task screens
• Information screens

- Menu screens or Configuration screens:

Some of these screens are gateways to other screens. These screens also give
information about laser system configuration or about the instructions that it

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0
has received. For example, on the “SCANNER PARAMETERS” screen of the
“SCANNER CONFIG.” submenu, it is possible to view and modify the current
setup for scanners on the laser system being used.

To select an option on a page simply move the cursor on the screen to the
option you wish to select.

- Screen for information entered by the user:

To enter or change information for the laser system, use the operator-entry
screens. For example, the screen “LASER SETUP”.

To enter information in an operator-entry screen, perform one of the following

actions.

• Entering information in a field:

To change the information that is highlighted in black, use the virtual

keyboard keys to enter the new information. The highlighted text is
overwritten when you begin to enter the new information.

If you wish to remove the highlighting to change the information, use the
Left arrow key or the Right arrow key of the virtual keyboard. The vertical
line that appears is the cursor. The cursor shows your current position in the

last configuration, you will see the new value and the incorrect value will have
been replaced.

- Task screens:

Task screens are used to create edit or print a message. For example, in
“PRINT” mode, a printing job may be started or stopped. The “MESSAGE” mode
is for creating and modifying (editing) a message.

- Information Screens:

For information about the laser system (system status, last alarm value,
number of markings or time), access the “HELP” option in the “PRINT” mode.

2 -7
The information screen contains information about the last event occurring in
the laser system. This event or alarm can be a warning, a system failure, a
print failure or an information event.
Press the “OK” button to close an information page.

Most warnings refer to an event that does not prevent normal operation; you
can read the information screen and then continue to use the laser system.
Nevertheless, the problem should be corrected as soon as possible. Press the
"OK" button to close the page then correct the problem. If you cannot correct
the problem, speak to your supervisor, or contact your local distributor.

If the event or alarm is a Print failure, you must correct the problem

You can now begin to use the laser system, with the help of the instructions in
this chapter.

The instructions will show you how to turn on the laser system, and how to
create, edit and print a message. Also, you will learn how to stop and turn off
the laser beam and stop the laser system.

First the laser system should be unpacked, installed and set up by a Macsa
approved technician. The main power supply unit should already be connected.

A message can contain several parts. Each part is called a field.. You can put
different types of fields into your message. For example:

• Text: a basic field that contains characters that will be printed in a text
field.

• Date and Time: used to print a Date field or a Time field.

• Sequential number: prints a value that increases or decreases with each

printed message.

• Sequential message: allows you to select the increments of the printing

sequence. When you enter this option the following parameters are
displayed

o Time: The printing sequence changes every day at the time

selected (HH:MM).
o Month: The printing sequence changes every year when reaching
the selected month (MM).
o Day: The printing sequence changes every month when reaching
the day selected (1...31).
o Month/Day: The printing sequence changes every year when
reaching the selected month and day (MMDD).

3.3.3. ADJUSTING THE PRINTING POSITION

This section explains how to ensure the printed message appears in the right
position on the product.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0

The following figure will help you understand the print position. The large
arrow shows the direction in which the product moves. In this example, there
is a fixed distance (C) between the marking head (A) and the photocell (B) that
detects the edge of the product. This distance is the same for all products and
all messages. The distance is zero for some installations. The installation
technician enters this measurement into the laser system during installation,
but you can change the value.

In this figure, the trigger signal from the sensor (photocell) occurs at the edge
of the product, although the label (E) is not at the edge of the product. The
distance between the sensor position and the print position (E) is the Print
Delay or Photocell Distance (D).

Use the following steps to change the print delay or photocell distance:

Touch Screen

1. Select “SETUP” mode on the main screen.

2. In this mode, select the "SIGNAL PARAMETERS" option.

3. Select the Photocell Distance option.

If the laser system is not printing (inactive):

The system must be turned off in different ways, depending on the amount of
time it remains inactive

Icon i-1030

- Power supply unit switch on the rear panel:

If the stoppage is a prolonged one (e.g., until the next day) the "Power
Switch" located at the rear of the laser tube must be used. This prevents
the laser system from consuming power. This switch cuts electrical power
and turns off the laser system completely, leaving it inactive. To prevent
the laser system from being used, remove the key from the back panel of
the laser tube.

- Key switch:
If you think the stoppage or period of inactivity of the laser system will be
relatively brief, it may be stopped from the key switch in order to disable
the laser beam but not the electrical power.

4.3. OVERLAPPING FIELDS (MARCA LITE)

Overlapping of two fields occurs only with the Marca Lite user interface.

An overlap occurs when one field crosses the borders of another. If fields
overlap, the overlapping areas will not be printed correctly, so one of the
fields must be moved (see how to move a field in section“4.4. Moving a field”).

To prevent overlapped fields, you must move the cursor outside the boundary
of the existing field before you insert the new field.

4.4. MOVING A FIELD (MARCA LITE)

Moving a field can only be done with a Marca Lite user interface.

Sometimes you must move a field within a message. For example, if you add a
new field that overlaps an existing field, you must move the new field to
correct the problem.

Use the following steps to move a field:

1. Click on the field that is overlapping. It becomes highlighted.

2. Move the cursor to the centre of the field until it becomes a cross with an
arrow on each point.

7.1. INTRODUCTION

The ICON Laser System allows the marking of mobile or stationary products
such as paper, wood and some plastics.

The wavelength of the laser is 10.6µm. This is the infrared part of the
spectrum, which means that the laser beam is invisible. The aim is to send this
beam to the surface to be marked by increasing the surface temperature.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0

The wavelength emitted by a particular laser system is specified on the

warning logo. Exposure to laser emissions can cause severe eye damage. All
reflections including specular diffusion from optical components and from
directional mirrors and prisms are dangerous. If the user is in doubt about the
distribution of laser emission within the external optical system, suitable
detecting equipment should be used. The energy level of the laser or the
exposure time can accelerate the deterioration of certain parts of the laser.

WARNING: ALL PERSONNEL MUST WEAR APPROVED LASER

GOGGLES/GLASSES AT ALL TIMES DURING OPERATION OF THE
SYSTEM WITHOUT ITS SAFETY PROTECTION COVER. THESE GOGGLES
MUST BE EFFECTIVE AT THE WAVELENGTHS THAT MAY BE
GENERATED.

Emissions considered completely invisible can interact with any surface that
may produce visible light. These emission can be dangerous. Therefore, the
user should take maximum precautions at all times.

Access to laser areas should be restricted to personnel whose work requires

operation of the laser. These personnel must be instructed in the necessary
safety procedures. Likewise, the work area should be marked off with warning
symbols.

Highlights of the ICON Laser System

• Reduced dimensions of laser system, with galvanometric scanners 6220.

• Plastic covers.
• Electronic control system within the laser.
• Marking head position at 90 degrees.
• Internal CPU.

The system consists of four main parts that make the marking process possible.

7-1
Laser Beam Source

In this case CO2, He and N2. At the same time the source is subdivided into the
following parts:

• Laser tube.
• RF power supply unit.

Beam deflection

It is necessary to deflect the beam towards the marking surface in the X, Y

directions. If the product is moving, one of the mirrors has to track it.

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0
• Galvanometric scanners X, Y assembly. These carry a mirror, which reflects
the laser beam onto the marking surface.

• Scanner control. Its function is to place the scanners at the correct angle at
all times in order to get the marking in the right position.

Electronic control

Its function is to control the message that is to be marked on the surface. It

consists of the following parts:

• SM-140 (and SM-141 with i-1010) control board.

• Internal CPU with ScanLinux software.
• Control interface (Touch Screen).

Cooling system

Since the energy generated by the system is discharged as heat, the system
needs to be cooled. In the case of laser systems from the ICON series, the
system is cooled by air. The cooling system consists of fans. ICON Laser systems
use only one fan located on the rear panel.

Optionally, the marking system can also incorporate a fume extractor to

remove fumes and other derivatives of the marking process.

7.8. FUME EXTRACTION SYSTEM AND INDICATOR LIGHTS

Macsa Icon Laser systems can incorporate some accessories such as:

• Fume extractor system.

• Indicator lights.

The following is an explanation of how to install them in the laser systems.

7.8.1. FUME EXTRACTOR SYSTEM INSTALLATION

The fume extractor is a mechanism for extracting fumes and particles resulting
from marking a product. Once these fumes and particles have been extracted,
they are driven through a pipe to the extractor, where they are filtered.

The fume extractor is not included in the Macsa Icon Series marking system.

WARNING: A fume extractor is always required in order to keep the

focus lens of the laser tube clean. Optical parts damaged due to
failure to use the fume extractor will not be replaced by MACSA ID,
S.A. even if the laser system is still under warranty.

To install this accessory, take the following steps:

1. Connect the DB-15 connector of the fume extractor to the CUSTOMER

connector located on the rear panel of the laser system.

2. Connect the power connector of the fume extractor to 110/220V AC.

7- 11

30V since pin 6 isn’t available for this model.

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / MARCH 12 - VER 1.2.0
7.8.2. INSTALLATION OF INDICATOR LIGHTS

Indicator lights show the laser system operation status at all times.

Like a normal traffic light, this accessory consists of two different colour
indicator lights, so that one or the other lights up depending on the status.

The colours and their meanings are as follows:

• Red: lights up to indicate that the laser system is not marking.

• Green: lights up when the laser system is marking and has already
completed the initialisation process.

To install this accessory, take the following steps:

1. Connect the DB-15 connector of the lighted indicators to the

CUSTOMER connector located on the rear panel of the laser system.

NOTE: In the case of i-1010 can be taken powered since pin 4 (+15V) or since pin 6
(+30V) , but in the case of i-1030 only can be taken since pin 4 (+15V), because the
30V since pin 6 isn’t available for this model.

SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
8
Before replacing any component, the end user should carefully read
Chapters 0 and 1 of this instruction manual.

To get maximum performance from the laser marking system and avoid
damage, it is very important to perform preventive maintenance on all
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / JANUARY 12 - VER 1.2.0

components.

A maintenance plan for all the components should always be to established,

and the working level and characteristics of the surface of the product to be
marked must be considered.

It is very important that the electrical power of the system be shut down
before any maintenance procedure, to prevent any hazardous exposure to laser
radiation.

8.1. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: Only authorized personnel should do system maintenance. The

procedures outlined below do not present any laser emission hazard. The
procedures must be followed carefully; failure to do so could cause laser
emission or seriously damage the laser system.

WARNING: The following operations must be carried out with the laser system
isolated from the main electricity supply.

Besides the preventive maintenance done by the laser system’s owners, a

thorough review of the coder by MACSA ID, S.A technicians must be done
periodically

The points to be checked are the following:

• Electronic control (every year)

• Laser tube cleaning (every two years)

Remove external laser system cover and clean the surfaces removing all

8-2
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
8.2. CLEANING THE LASER SYSTEM
8
8.2.1. LASER SYSTEM COVER

Use a clean cloth, soft, damp and lint-free. Avoid touching the lenses with
the damp cloth.

Do not use abrasive materials which can damage the laser system.

Use a lint-free cloth to prevent any contamination of the marking head.

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / JANUARY 12 - VER 1.2.0

8.2.2. MARKING HEAD

To clean the marking head:

1. Stop and turn off the laser system (see section 3.4).

2. Use a damp, lint-free cloth around the marking head, avoiding contact with
the lens.

3. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to dry the marking head. Avoid touching the lens
with the cloth.

8.3. LENSES

Pay special attention when handling the lens holder to ensure the
lens surface is not touched by fingers or any other device.

Clean all lenses with acetone and optical paper.

During the marking process, a volatilisation of particles and fumes from the
surface of the marked product occurs, which are absorbed by the extraction
system. The problem increases when these particles form deposits on the lens
surface. Deposits of particles on the lens may cause two different problems:

• A decrease in power due to lack of transparency in the lens.

• Lens damage when the deposited particles are burned by the laser.

For these reasons, the lens should be cleaned periodically. Otherwise, these
may be damaged and the laser beam focus distorted.

All optical materials used in the infrared range are very fragile and their
maintenance requires extreme care. These optical elements must be carefully
handled and proper maintenance products must be used. Below is a set of basic
materials required to clean the lenses and mirrors

8-3
• Plastic tweezers.
• Lens cleaning paper.
• Pure acetone, never use water or soap.

8.3.1. LENS CLEANING

Lens cleaning must be done using latex gloves.

Carry out the following steps to clean the lens:

1. Make sure the laser is not enabled. (In any case, it is advisable to turn the

PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / JANUARY 12 - VER 1.2.0
system off to clean the lens).

2. Remove the lens. Unscrew the lens and its holder from the base of the
marking head.

3. Carefully inspect the condition of the lens surface.

4. Lay the lens and its holder on a flat, even surface.

5. Fold the lens cleaning paper two or three times, avoiding sharp corners and
hold it with the plastic tweezers but without letting them touch the lens
surface directly, as this would damage the protective coating of the lens.

6. With the aid of tweezers, gently rub both surfaces of the lens in a circular
motion with the lens cleaning paper. The plastic tweezers must never touch
the lens surface because this would damage its protective coating.

7. Next clean the focus lens.

8. Repeat this procedure (changing the paper each time) until the lens is
clean.

9. Install the lens and its holder on the marking head base.

It is not possible to recommend a suitable frequency for cleaning the lens,

because it will depend on the kind of product that is being coded. Products
that generate a large amount of particles and fumes when coded will also dirty
the lens faster, so it will be necessary to clean it more often. Each user shall
establish the cleaning frequency required, depending on the hours of coding
and the kind of product coded.

8.3.2. VISUAL INSPECTION OF OPTICAL ELEMENTS

Remove the main laser cover head. Check exposed optical surfaces for signs of
damage or contamination. The most contaminating element for lenses is dust
or the volatised material itself. This can be removed with a small air puffer. Do
not use any type of aerosol as it could cause freezing.

8-4
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
DO NOT remove any protective cover or other covers.
8
Inspection and cleaning of the elements protected by these covers must be
done by specialized personnel.

Special care should be taken in the inspection of optical elements with

polished surfaces. The optic elements are highly hygroscopic (water soluble).
They can be damaged if they are touched by fingers or can become opaque if
breathed on.
PROPERTY OF MACSA ID, S.A. EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL USE / JANUARY 12 - VER 1.2.0

If any optic component shows signs of contamination or damage, it must be

cleaned with acetone, or replaced, and realigned. This work must only be done
by a specialized technician.

Replace the laser cover.

8.3.3. FOCAL DISTANCE

The focal distance is the distance from the lens centre to the focusing point
where the product to be coded is positioned.

This distance must be periodically checked because it affects the quality of the
printing. It should also be checked after the lens has been cleaned.

8.3.4. X/Y POSITIONING SYSTEM

You must check that the laser beam is correctly centred with respect to the
scanner mirrors. Use the following procedure to check this:

Select a message with 30x30mm square and print it. If you do not get a perfect
square, i.e., if it is distorted or one of the sides is imperfect or absent, the
alignment is not correct.

To resolve this problem, move the position dials until you obtain the desired
position.
