Teacher’s notes
Summary
In this documentary, students learn about the clothes people wear in the UK. The documentary covers
school uniform, the uniforms people wear for their jobs, ceremonial uniform, national dress, and also the
clothes that people choose to wear to reflect their preferences or personalities. Students also see footage
of the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Before you watch 00:00–01:28

1 Check students understand the jobs. Then ask 5 Play 00:00–01:28 and get students to check their

While you watch
Play all
3 Tell students that they are going to watch
a documentary about appearance in the UK.
Tell them to watch it carefully and number
the six photographs from exercise 1 in the
order they see them.

4 Give students time to read the facts about the
UK and choose an answer. Explain that you
don’t expect them to know all the answers, but
encourage them to make a sensible guess.

7 Check students understand the sentences. Then
play the final section and ask students to decide
if the sentences are true or false.

8 Tell the students that they are going to watch
the documentary again and they must look
out for the four photographs. Start playing
the documentary and stop it immediately
when the students shout Stop! Ask the
students to explain what is happening on the
screen. Repeat the process for the rest of the
photographs.

After you watch
9 Tell students that this is their opportunity to
talk about themselves and find out about their
partner. Tell them that they are going to work
in pairs and interview each other to find out
their answers to some questions about clothes
and appearance. First make sure the students
understand each question, then tell them to
take turns to ask and answer the questions.
They should note down their partner’s answers.

Students write a short paragraph about their
partner and give a presentation about them, using
the answers to the questionnaire in exercise 9.

10 Tell students that they are going to do some
research about some well-known items
of clothing: Levi’s® jeans and Wellington.
Students will need time to find out the
necessary information from books or on
the Internet, so they could do this task for
homework. They then complete the tables with
the relevant details.

Optional activity
Ask students to choose one of the items of
clothing and use the facts in their table to write

the whole class, ask some students to give their
presentation and answer any questions.
