Lesson 4.4: Symmetric and Asymmetric Distributions Application

A. Sam runs as part of his morning routine. He recorded his times in minutes for the past four
days.

9, 10, 11, 12

Does the data show a symmetric distribution? Explain.

It is a symmetric distribution because the left and right sides mirror each other. It has
zero skewness which means it is perfectly symmetric.

B. There are eight brothers and sisters in Tala’s family. Their ages are as follows:

22, 25, 14, 10, 7, 13, 20, 6

Does the data show a symmetric distribution? Explain.

The data is not a symmetric distribution because the left side and the right side of the
distribution are roughly mirror images of each other hence it is approximately symmetric with
a slight skew to the right.

C. For the following data, compute for the Pearson’s coefficient of skewness.

79, 72, 69, 76, 76, 70, 77, 75, 72, 67, 70, 71, 87

Formula: Skewness Coefficient = 3 x (mean - median) / σ

Where, σ = Standard deviation.
Mean = 79, 72, 69, 76, 76, 70, 77, 75, 72, 67, 70, 71, 87
13
= 961
5
= 73.9231
Median = 72

Standard Deviation (σ) = 5.0758

Coefficient of Skewness = 1.1366

Answer: 1.1366
