Bs Biology 2C Microbiology Lab Prof. Karmela Del Rosario Activity 2: Effect of handwashing on microbial growth, on the result and observation pls. draw some possible appearances/number of microorganisms/ bacteria present placing on "before handwashing and after handwashing" (one only) then answer the guide questions.
1. What is the overall trend that you observe in the plates?
In before cleaning plate it is important to touch the surface of the plate with three or four fingers of the dominant hand and make a good contact with the agar and careful not to squish fingers into it. In the entire procedure make sure not to touch anything other than the clean paper towel to dry hands before touching the second agar plate for after washing plate. By observing each plate from method A to D decreasing number of microorganism occur. Student A using water would reduce the number of microorganism in a little number while in Student D method the microorganism nearly completely remove all the microorganism in hand washing.
2. Did handwashing reduce the number of microorganisms on the person’s hands
in most cases? Yes, because handwashing with water alone reduced the prevalence of bacteria substantially. Handwashing with soap was more effective in reducing the prevalence of contamination and specifically of Enterococcus spp.
3. Did handwashing reduce the number of different types of microorganisms?
Yes it may not reduce effectively in some cases but hand washing with water can reduce the number and also method like applying soap and alcohol and sanitizers effectively remove microorganism in hand washing. Some microorganisms are more easily removed by handwashing than others.
4. Which method seemed most effective?
The produce of student D is the most effective method, because hand washing with water and soap can reduce and remove some microorganism and germs applying alcohol or sanitizer after the procedure C would make it more clean and remove all the excess microorganism that left in hand washing with water and soap.
