PE- Self-Defense

❖ Pre – Test Explain the following word/s and phrase/s in two to three sentences. Answer
comprehensively. (Each will receive five (3) points)
1. Self – defense
Self- defense is a use of force to protect oneself from an attempted injury by another . A
form of proctecting yourself from getting harm or getting attack by the other people, it
was use in the times of danger.

2. Code of conduct
Code of conduct is a set of rules, goals ,principles , responsibility, and expectation of an
organization. It the one who drove the organization to achieve the expectation and the
goals of the organization.

3. Philosophy
Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected
with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is also a way
of thinking about the world, the universe and society.

4. Mano mano –
Mano mano refers to the unarmed fighting or empty-hand component of Philippine
martial arts. Mano mano means hand or hand to hand, it was also known as suntukan
in Luzon. Mano mano includes kicking, punching,locking,throwing and graphing.

5. Governing Body
Governing Body is a group of people who create policy , rules and has the authority to
exercise governance over the certain organization. They are the one who have the
ultimate control of the organization . They are mainly constituted for the purpose of
administration and has the authority to make decisions and rules for the organization.

❖ Activity One Directions: Discuss the following comprehensively. (5 points each)


1. In your own opinion, what is Code of Conduct?
A Code of conduct is simply a set of principles, rules, and expectations to guide the
behaviour of all those who belong to a particular sport or organization. A code of conduct
provides unity, standard, and direction for the organization. Also, a code of conduct is
not just a rule it is a document that conveys the values and principles of the particular
organization.
2. What is the relevance of discipline in Self - defense? Why do we need to be disciplined
in playing Arnis?
We as an individual it is good that we practice self-discipline in this way we can face the
challenges in life and maintain a higher tolerance for frustration, challenges, and
negative emotions. If we have a self-disciplined must be responsible for our own
actions. It is important in playing arnis or other martial arts sports, because, As a form of
self-defense, we all want to make ourselves prepared against attack and aggression.
You can't control other people but we can control ourselves. Having the discipline to
keep control of yourself, means you have a better chance of choosing the correct action
in a variety of situations.
3. What is the importance of having discipline in any type of sports or martial arts?

Being disciplined is important in any type of sports because it helps you to be self-
discipline and focused, you will reach your goals and learn that you can achieve all your
goals if you fight for them. The ability to discipline yourself and focus on realistic goals is
a great benefit of martial arts training that helps you to become physically and mentally
fit and enhance your mental and emotional energies, and get along well with others and
succeed in every aspect of life.
❖ Activity Two List at least five (5) benefits from learning Arnis.
1. Arnis can be use as self-defense
2. Arnis teaches us discipline and control
3. It gives you positive encouragement and respect for values in martial arts.
4. Flexibility is increased
5. It promotes a sense of nationalism and pride as a Filipino
Give at least five (5) code of conduct in Arnis.
6. Use only one’s skills in self-defense, self –preservation , and the protection of others where
the need necessitates.
7. Respect fellow martial arts practitioners regardless of their chosen style.
8. Do not engender ill feeling or engage in petty rivalry with other practitioners and training hall.
9. Be disciplined in the training and appreciation of martial arts.
10. Abide by the rules of one’s club and association.
11-15. Why do we need to take note some of the common rules in Arnis? (5 pts)
Arnis is one of the examples of martial art. Arnis has the main goal for us to train and learn how
to fight, to do self-defense, and how to use our bodies effectively. The Arnis are used for self-
defense they are not used to bully or intimidate innocent and weak people. We need to take
note of some of the common rules in Arnis , for us to avoid violations and have a good play
without hurting our opponent severely and intentionally. Also as we all know we have a weapon
used while playing Arnis, a wooden stick to be specified. If we hit our opponent on the body part
that is too dangerous, it can end up on to something miss fortune or even could end up
someone's life. Or even yourself is liable to get bruised and cut, and joints and bones possibly
could get injured. That is why following the rules , having respect for our opponent and
disciplined is important.

❖ Assignment Some words or terminologies in Arnis may be new to you, that’s why as for your
last task for this module, have some time to search for the terminologies listed below and look
for their meaning. This assignment will help you to be introduced to the next module for your
better understanding of the unfamiliar terms.

Largo – distance ( long range)
Pangagaw – referring to disarming techniques
Pangandam – on guard or ready, Handa in Tagalog.
Panukad – Stance. Tayo in Tagalog.
Patama - Strike
Saludo - Salutation
Sangga – blocking parrying in pre-arranged manner
Sinawali – Lit “ to weave,” connoting the continous weaving motion that one uses with two
batons, knives, or hands to couple simultaneous strikes and blocks. Also, like redonda or
hubud-lubud, a drill pattern.
