1 Talk to your partner to find out as much as you can about them. Ask them questions about:
their job / studies their family holidays
their interests where they live
e.g.
A: What do you like doing in your free time?
B: I like fishing.
A: Really? Me too! Where do you go fishing?
2 Join another pair. Introduce your partner and say what you know about them. Find out what your
group has in common.
e.g.
A: Hi. This is Max.
C / D: Hi Max
A: Max likes fishing …
3 Look at the questions and match them with their answers.
6 What’s your favourite film? f She’s over there. She’s wearing a red dress.
4 Look at these questions and answers again. Look at the verbs. What’s the difference?
1 A: What do you like doing in your free time? B: I enjoy cooking.
2 A: Are you enjoying your English course? B: Yes, and I’m learning lots.
5 With your partner practise asking and answering the questions in 3. Give your own answers.

order. Number them 1–6.

3 Look at dialogues 1 and 2 and find phrases for:

1 You’re at a welcome party at an international conference. Think of questions you can ask
people there.
e.g. Where are you staying?
2 Your teacher will help you build a conversation between three people at the welcome party.
Then you will practise the conversation.
3 Your teacher will give you a role card. Think about your role and complete the card with your
own ideas. You will then role-play the welcome party. Include the following in each conversation:

Ask and answer questions Meet and find out about as many people
Say you must go as you can.
4 What can you remember about all the people you met? Discuss with your group. Then report to
the class about what you remember.
5 It’s the day after the welcome party. Have more conversations, but this time be yourself.

Peter: Who was that?
John: It was the doctors. I forgot, I’ve got an appointment. I’m really sorry but I have to run.
Peter: Ok, no problem. We’ll talk later.
