Reading
Hello, "How are you?". “Good morning”, “Have you eaten yet?", “Where are you going?"
There are greetings which people use in different languages when they meet each other. But what is
greeting? A greeting is a way of being friendly to someone. It is a way of being polite. It is also a
way of starting a conversation. In many languages giving a question is used as greeting, such as
"where are you going", "How's everything with you? But questions like these
are not real questions. They do not require a full answer or even a true one. In
English, for example, the commonest greeting is a question about a person’s
health: ‘How are you?’ but we do not expect the person the person to tell us
about their health when they reply. We do not expect them to talk about their
headache or their backache, if they have one. People reply to these questions
with a fixed expression such as ‘I’m fine, thanks’ or ‘I’m very well, thanks’.
In the same way, in countries where people greet each other with ‘Where are you going?’, a simple
reply such as ‘just walking around’ is sufficient. It is not necessary to describe where you are
actually going.

UNIT 1
How to Say Hello & Goodbye

Greetings are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each
other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This
shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the
grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behaviour of the people who speak it.

Reading
Prophet Adam
Allah made the mountains and the seas. He made all the animals. He made the heavens and
the stars. He made the sun and the moon and he made the angels. The angels were like Allah's
servants and did everything He ordered. Then Allah decided to make a man. He called this first man
Adam. He taught him many things so that Adam had more knowledge than the angels. There was
one Jinn, called Iblis and he thought he was better than Adam so Allah would not let him stay with
the other angels. He was to be called 'Shaytan', the Devil. Shaytan blamed Adam for what had
happened to him and was very angry. Allah let Adam live in a beautiful place because he was good.

The place was called Paradise. It was a very nice place but Adam was a little lonely, on his own all
of the time. Allah decided to help Adam. He made Hawa to be Adam's wife. They were happy and
liked living in Paradise. There was, however, one thing they were not allowed to do. There was a
special tree and Allah had told them they must not eat any fruit from that tree.
At first Adam and Hawa were very good and kept away from the tree. Shaytan decided to do
something very naughty. He told them they were silly to keep away from the tree. He said nothing
would happen if they ate its fruit. He said the fruit was delicious and they should try it. After a
while they began to listen to Shaytan and thought they would have just a little taste of the fruit, just
to see what it was like. Shaytan was very happy because he had made them disobey Allah. As soon
as they had eaten the fruit, Adam and Hawa realised that they had been very naughty and they felt
guilty for what they had done. Allah forgave them but He wouldn't let them stay in Paradise any
more so He sent them to live on earth.

UNIT 1
How to Say Hello & Goodbye

Uthman ibn Affan was the third of Prophet Muhammad’s successors.  He was known as the
leader of the faithful and ruled for approximately 12 years.  The first six years were times of relative
tranquillity and peace, however the last years of his reign were marred by internal conflict, and
pockets of rebels trying to cause havoc throughout the
Caliphate. Uthman is remembered as a pious, gentle, and kind
man, known for his modesty and shyness, and admired for his
generosity.  He ruled with impartial justice and mild and
humane policies, based on his obedience to God and his love
for Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim nation.
Uthman, may God be pleased with him, was born seven years after Prophet Muhammad, may the
mercy and blessings of God be upon him, and belonged to the Umayyad branch of the Quraish
tribe.  The Umayyads were the most influential clan of the Quraish, they were the strongest and
wealthiest, and Uthman was their “golden child”, the most beloved, due to his good manners and
shyness.  Like his predecessor Omar ibn Al Khattab, Uthman was able to read and write.  This was
an unusual skill in pre Islamic Arabia and Uthman became a successful trader and cloth merchant.
Throughout his life he was known as a kind, generous man and even before his conversion to Islam
he would freely give money to help those in need. (www.Al-Islam.org)
