ACTIVITIES 4
Directions: Read the selection below then answer the questions that follow.

“Not a Typical Day”

It was early in the morning, and I got up from my bed confused of silence
around me. I peeked out the window while wondering why I cannot hear any
vehicle passing. My neighbors’ houses are close. Are they still sleeping? But
the sun was already rising above the clouds. I touched the wet windowpane
due to the dew drops to make sure I was not dreaming. Then, I heard a
familiar voice from downstairs.

“Hanna! Go downstairs. Time to eat our breakfast.”

I asked myself, “Isn’t that Mama? Why is she here? Is it Sunday, today? I ran
fast downstairs and shouting, “Mama, mama! Is that you?”
“Yes dear. I’m here.” I rushed to her and hugged her so tight.
“Is it Sunday, Mama?”, I asked.
“No, dear. It’s Wednesday.”, she answered.

“What! Why didn’t you wake me for school? Don’t you have work? Are you
sick?” I asked with my one eyebrow higher than the other. “Wait! One question
at a time. Come, you sit down here and let’s eat and I’ll answer your question
one by one.”, she said with a smile.

5
“This will not be a typical day for us and even the coming days, my dear.
Schools are closed and works are stopped. Our president asked everybody to
stay at home to be safe from the virus called Corona Virus. It makes people
sick and some.”

“Oh, I remember! I saw that news in Facebook last night. But, where is Papa?
Why is he not here with us?”
“Nurse, in a hospital.”

“There are many people who are sick now because of the virus.

“Who will help them get well?”

“Doctors and nurses. So, Papa needs to stay with them and help them right?

“Yes, Papa needs to be in the hospital to take care of them so they will be well
soon. I hope Papa will be safe while taking care of them and that he will not
get too tired. I wish I can help him.” I said with my lip corners pulled down
and my eyelids loosed.

“We can help Papa fights the virus.”, Mama said with her cheeks raised.

Suddenly, my face glows. “Really? How?”, I asked.

“We should keep ourselves safe by staying at home and keep ourselves and
this home clean. With this, we can slow and prevent the spread of the virus.
Can you do that?”, Mother asked.

“Yes, I will Mama.” I answered while raising my thumbs up with a loud voice.

While eating, there were impossible ideas came in my mind like what if I
am a Superhero. Maybe, I can go outside and get all the virus to protect the
people not to get sick so Papa can go home here with us. Sadly, I’m not and
can’t be.

After breakfast, I helped Mama. We washed the dishes and cleaned the
house. We cleaned the living room, bedrooms, and restrooms. Also, we
emptied trash, and replaced liners.

Mom prepared a vegetable meal, “pinakbet”, for our lunch. She said,
we should keep our body healthy so we will have strong immune system.
Vegetables and fruits support our immune system making it stronger.

6
While Mama was in her room, I went upstairs in my room too and opened the
window. My neighbors’ houses were still close. I could not see anyone on the
street in front of us. I remember my playmates. Typically, even the street
shimmered in the heat of the midday sun. We raced from school to our
houses. We do our assignments and play. But today and on the coming days,
we can’t see each other. Everything has changed.

Children like me are not allowed to play outside. Adults like my mama
can go outside just to buy food and medicine for us but they should practice
social distancing means they should be 6 feet away from each other.
No shaking of hands and kissing just nodding of heads and waving of hands.
Lastly, Papa can’t go home every day to see us to protect us and take care of
the sick. Oh, I will surely miss him!
I wish I have a magic wand so I can remove all the viruses outside and
cover the whole world with protection so everything will be back to normal.

Hanna! Hanna!”
“Yes, Mama. I am here.”
Mama went closely to me and tapped my shoulder then asked, “Are you
alright, dear?”
“Not so much Mama.” I answered with a soft voice.

“Don’t think too much about what is happening at present. Instead, be

thankful that we are safe at this time and pray that we will for the coming
days. It may not be like our normal days, but let us make these days happy,
productive and meaningful together.” She hugged me so tight making me feel
that I am safe.

She was right! It is maybe not a normal day, but what important is that
we are safe!
The only thing I can do now is to pray for the protection of my family and
everybody and ask Him to give strength to those who are suffering now
because of the CoVid-19.

REMEMBER

10
A Fact or Real images exists and could happen in real life. Make-Believe or Non-
Fact Images are imaginary and could not happen in a real life.

Bat is real.

Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera. With their forelimbs adapted
as wings, they are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats
are more manoeuvrable than birds, flying with their very long spread-out digits
covered with a thin membrane or patagium. The smallest bat, and arguably the
smallest extant mammal, is Kitti's hog-nosed bat, which is 29–34 millimetres
(1+1⁄8–1+3⁄8 inches) in length, 150 mm (6 in) across the wings and 2–2.6 g (1⁄16–
3⁄
32 oz) in mass. The largest bats are the flying foxes, with the giant golden-
crowned flying fox, Acerodon jubatus, reaching a weight of 1.6 kg (3+1⁄2 lb) and
having a wingspan of 1.7 m (5 ft 7 in).
Bats provide humans with some direct benefits, at the cost of some
disadvantages. Bat dung has been mined as guano from caves and used as
fertiliser. Bats consume insect pests, reducing the need for pesticides and other
insect management measures. They are sometimes numerous enough and close
enough to human settlements to serve as tourist attractions, and they are used
as food across Asia and the Pacific Rim. However, fruit bats are frequently
considered pests by fruit growers. Due to their physiology, bats are one type of
animal that acts as a natural reservoir of many pathogens, such as rabies; and
since they are highly mobile, social, and long-lived, they can readily spread
disease among themselves. If humans interact with bats, these traits become
potentially dangerous to humans.

LOOKING BACK

On March 8, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation 922

placing the entire Philippines under state of public health emergency
because of the COVID-19 threat that is looming in the nation. On the
next day, March 9, Congressman Joey Salceda of the 2nd district of
the province of Albay recommended a lockdown of the entire National
Capital Region (NCR) for a period of seven days, in response to the
COVID-19 threat. Some of Salceda's proposals for implementing the
lockdown include banning mass transportation and stopping the
operation of the Philippine expressway network that ply to and from
the region, and canceling of classes and work.At first, President
Rodrigo Duterte turned down the idea because it would "hamper the
flow of basic commodities," although, Health Secretary Francisco
Duque III, opined that the lockdown may put into effect in some areas
where there are reported community-based transmissions, but not the
whole NCR.

On March 12, President Duterte announced the "community

quarantine" of Metro Manila that would start at 12 midnight on March
15 up to April 14 that covers 16 cities and one municipality. Traveling
through land, domestic air, and domestic sea from Metro Manila was
suspended but with exceptions. For international travel, restrictions
are imposed on those who came from countries with localized COVID-
19 transmissions, except for citizens of the Philippines (including their
foreign spouse and children) or holders of permanent resident visas
and diplomat visas. Mass transportation vehicles are allowed to
operate provided that persons riding these vehicles comply with the
social distancing guidelines. Curfew has also put into place by
the local government units (LGUs) of Metro Manila.

25
During the second day of the implementation of the Metro Manila community
quarantine, on March 16, President Duterte declared a Luzon-wide
"enhanced community quarantine" (ECQ) that aimed to further combat the
effect of the continuing and increasing spread of COVID-19. It took effect on
March 17 and was supposedly scheduled to end on April 12. This quarantine
also included the Mimaropa region (Occidental and Oriental
Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) despite it being outside the
Luzon island. The Luzon ECQ is described under a March 16 memorandum
from Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea by the order of the President as
compliance to Proclamation No. 929 (state of calamity of the whole
Philippines due to COVID-19), Proclamation No. 922 (public health
emergency) and Republic Act No. 11332 (reporting of communicable diseases
law)

Hi, I’m Gina. I’m Living at Kaunlaran Village, Navotas City.

When our government declared the implementation of ECQ to
control the spread of the virus, our family decided to obey the
guidelines by staying at home as much as possible.
I am 12 years old, so I wasn’t allowed to go out.

First, I enjoyed staying at home for few weeks, but as the ECQ
implementation is extended longer, I started to get bored.
Every day I am excited to check our teacher’s instruction for our
daily lesson in our group chat. Our school is using the blended
modality of learning. I am reading and answering my module and
make it sure that it is done on time.
After doing my module, I watched TV shows and movies.
Sometimes, I watched them over and over just to overcome
boredom.

One day, I got an idea on how to make my day productive

instead of feeling bored.

I told my brother to help Mama clean our house and sanitize it

for our health safety.
He agreed, after doing our modules we clean the house together.
Mama was very happy seeing us helping her doing house chores.

26
As the ECQ is getting longer, I learn to play with my little brother.
I enjoy playing with him and I think we became closer each day.
I taught him how to fix his toys back after playing and we are
looking forward to play with each other the next day.

I also learned to help him in his modules while Mama is busy

doing things for us.

Now both I and my brother learn to play with our little sister too.

We read books together and tell stories for her.

Every day is not boring at all. I enjoyed every moment I have with
my family at home. Doing things productively together is a lot of
fun and it feels good!
If staying at home will make us safe, then we can think of ways to
enjoy staying at home while we are safe.

FACT CHECK

Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions

between 60% and 90% alcohol with 10-40%
purified water, is rapidly antimicrobial
against bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

The presence of water is a crucial factor in

destroying or inhibiting the growth of
pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl
alcohol. Water acts as a catalyst and plays a
key role in denaturing the proteins of
vegetative cell membranes. 70% IPA
solutions penetrate the cell wall more completely which permeates the entire cell,
coagulates all proteins, and therefore increasing surface contact time and enhancing
effectiveness. Isopropyl alcohol concentrations over 91% coagulate proteins
instantly. Consequently, a protective layer is created which protects other proteins
from further coagulation.

Face shield have been used in healthcare setting for

a while now, but they’ve become a staple for medical
personnel who have to intubate patients with
COVID-19. Face shields are often worn during a wide
variety of medical procedures. This includes
surgeries or any procedure where bone fragments,
blood or other bodily fluids could get into the eyes,
nose and mouth.

A face shield is simply a curved plastic or Plexiglas

panel attached to a headband that can be worn over the face. It should fit securely
so there isn’t a gap between the band and the forehead. The shield should also extend
beyond the chin. The coverage that face shields offer is deal since the new
coronavirus can enter the body through those points.

A 2014 study showed that when tested against an influenza-infused aerosol from a
distance of 18 inches away, a face shield reduced exposure by 96% during the period

33
immediately after a cough. The face shield also reduced the surface contamination
of a respirator by 97%.

Masks are an additional step to help prevent people from

getting and spreading COVID-19. They provide a barrier
that keeps respiratory droplets from spreading. Wear a
mask and take every day preventive actions in public
settings.

Masks are two-way street. Masks protect you and me.

When we all wear masks, we take care of each other, and
everyone is protected.

Correct and consistent mask use is a critical step

everyone can take top prevent getting and spreading
COVID-19. Masks work best when everyone wears them, but not all masks provide
the same protection. When choosing a mask, look at how well it fits, how well it filters
the air, and how many layers it has.

Hand washing is one of the best ways to

protect yourself and your family from
getting sick. Learn when and how you
should wash your hands to stay healthy.

Washing hands can keep you healthy

and prevent the spread of respiratory
and diarrheal infections from one person
to the next. Germs can spread from
other people or surfaces when you:

Touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with

unwashed hands.

Prepare or eat food and drinks with unwashed hands.

Touch a contaminated surface or objects.

Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze into your hands and then touch other people’s
hands or common objects.

You can help yourself and your loved ones, stay healthy by washing your hands
often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

Before, during, and after preparing food.

Before and after eating food.

Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea.

34
Before and after treating a cut or wound.

After using the toilet.

After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.

After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

After touching ab animal, animal feed, or animal waste.

After handling pet food or pet treats.

After touching garbage.
