Product description

Product description
EMC Navisphere Quality of Service Manager (NQM) is a software
product that enables the dynamic allocation of storage-system resources
to meet application service-level requirements. NQM gives you the
ability to prioritize applications and set specific performance targets so
that you get the service levels you would like to obtain for your mission-
critical applications. NQM can also monitor storage-system performance
on an application-by-application basis, giving a logical view of
application performance on the storage system itself. All performance
data gathered by NQM is presented to you with various charts that you
can use for application performance analysis and trending.
In addition to displaying real-time data, NQM allows you to archive
seven days of performance data for offline trending and data analysis. In
order to allow offline processing of performance archive files, NQM
offers two standalone client tools to retrieve performance archives from
the storage system as well as export data to other file formats.
NQM 6.26.0 resides on CX3 UltraScale™ series and CX series storage
systems, and integrates seamlessly with the Navisphere web-based
interface that is downloaded to the browser when the storage processor
(SP) on the storage system is accessed. NQM also offers all functionality
with a command line interface that plugs directly into the Navisphere
Secure CLI component.

New features and changes

Š Archive retrieve integration with Navisphere Secure CLI
• The archive retrieve client tool is integrated with Navisphere
Secure CLI under the nqm option.
• Retrieving an archive does not require the Java JRE to be
installed.
• Supported host platforms for retrieving archives are Windows,
Linux, Solaris (Sparc and Opteron), HP-UX, IBM-AIX.
Š Archive dump independent of Java JRE
• The archive dump client tool does not require the Java JRE to be
installed.
• The tool offers all options offered by the Java version in the
previous release.
• The tool is integrated with Navisphere Secure CLI under the
nqm option.

New features and changes

• Supported host platforms for retrieving archives are Windows,

Linux, Solaris (Sparc and Opteron), HP-UX, IBM-AIX.
Š NQM off-array management
• NQM is available under the off-array UI package.
• NQM off-array allows opening of archives at all times.
• NQM off-array allows management of NQM with all
functionality for storage systems that have NQM enabled.

CAUTION
Be sure to follow configuration guidelines outlined by EMC. Using
improper settings can cause erratic behavior.

Environment and system requirements

Environment and system requirements

This section identifies the minimum environment and system
requirements for Navisphere.

Client requirements
Since NQM integrates directly with the Navisphere Management UI and
Navisphere Management Server, refer to the Navisphere Manager
release notes for a full list of client requirements.

Network requirements
Since NQM integrates directly with the Navisphere Management UI and
Navisphere Management Server, refer to the Navisphere Manager
release notes for a full list of network requirements.

Operating systems
Since NQM integrates directly with the Navisphere Management UI and
Management Server, refer to the Navisphere Manager release notes for a
full list of operating system requirements.

Off-array management server requirements

Refer to the Navisphere Manager release notes for a full list of off-array
management server requirements.

Navisphere management software requirements

Š To use NQM on any supported storage system (CX3 UltraScale
series and CX series), the NQM enabler must be installed on the
storage system.
Š The version of the FLARE Operating Environment must be 03.26.yyy
(CX3 UltraScale series) or 02.26.yyy (CX series) for all supported
storage systems.
EMC recommends that you always use the current shipping version of
Navisphere Host Agent and Navisphere Manager to manage domains
and for off-array management stations. Refer to the Navisphere Manager
and Host Agent release notes for a full compatibility matrix.

14 EMC Navisphere Quality of Service Manager (NQM) Version 6.26.0 Release Notes
Technical notes

Technical notes
This section includes important information that does not appear
anywhere else.

Control methods
Š Using the cruise control method when running a policy to achieve
certain performance targets requires NQM to go through a period of
information gathering and calibrating, which can take 7 minutes or
more. During this time, NQM gathers information about current
application workloads and how changes in workload might affect
competing application’s performance. Note that during this time, the
performance of some applications may fluctuate more than usual.
These fluctuations are only temporary but may last until NQM
achieves the desired performance goals or determines that the goals
are not achievable under current storage-system workload and stops
trying to achieve those goals. The search and calibrate process will
not be repeated on subsequent runs of that same unmodified policy.
However, if application performance significantly changes between
policy runs you might again observe performance fluctuations until
goals have been achieved.
NOTE: If you instruct NQM to continue to attempt to achieve its
performance goals but it cannot achieve them, performance may
continue to fluctuate. In this case, EMC recommends that you set the
Action on Failure parameter of your policy to Stop or re-adjust your
performance goals.
Š When NQM has achieved your application performance goals using
the cruise control method, you may see eventual spikes or drops in
application performance. This is because NQM tests for workload
changes in the environment at random time intervals so that it can
adapt to workload changes quickly.

EMC Navisphere Quality of Service Manager (NQM) Version 6.26.0 Release Notes 15
Technical notes

Š As a general rule, all I/O class definitions within a policy must be

unambiguous. This means that each I/O class within a policy must
describe an independent set of I/O requests that cannot duplicate
any other set of requests in the same policy. For example, you cannot
add two I/O classes that are both comprised of all I/O requests
targeting a certain LUN to the same policy. However, if one I/O
class contains all writes to the target LUN and the other I/O class
contains all reads to the same LUN, the operation is allowed. To
make it easier to identify target LUNs that have not been added to
any I/O class yet and therefore prevent I/O class overlaps, a request
for enhancement RFE 158360 has been filed.
Š In general, EMC recommends that you set the goal value tolerance
available with using the cruise control method to more than 5
percent. Since the tolerance to any value lower than 5 percent will
increase the time it takes NQM to achieve its performance goals and
in many cases cause NQM to fail to achieve those goals, minimum
value for tolerance is now 5 percent (RFE #159459). The higher the
variation in workload, the higher the tolerance value should be. It
has been seen that response time seems to fluctuate in higher
degrees than throughput and bandwidth. Therefore you should use
a higher tolerance value for response time goals.

Charts and preferences

Š Navisphere Analyzer shares many NQM chart preferences so that
you need to set your chart preferences for both products only once.
For example, if you select a blue chart background, charts from both
products will have a blue background. You can bring up the shared
Customize dialog with the tools menu entry from either product.
Keep in mind that the Customize dialog also contains settings that
pertain to only one particular product.
Š When you start to measure or run a policy, it might take up to 20
seconds to see the first data sample appear on the chart. During this
time the chart will be blank and only the axes without tick labels will
be visible. If you have several charts open at the same time you
might be required to scroll the chart to the right to see the latest data
samples.
Š Viewing policies with 20 or more I/O classes in the NQM chart
panel might make it difficult to identify current performance levels
for individual I/O classes based on the multitude of displayed line
graphs. To alleviate this problem you should use the I/O class
filtering functionality that is part of the chart configuration options.
You can also mouse over individual data points to identify I/O class
performance levels. (RFE #152839)

Documentation

Š Although every effort has been made to generate unique color

combinations for the lines displayed on the NQM chart panels, due
to differences in video adapters, video monitors, and individual
perceptions of color, occasionally lines will be displayed whose
colors will be difficult to distinguish. This problem is most
pronounced when a 256-color video mode is used and least visible
when a True Color video mode is set. We recommend you use the
highest color resolution possible for the desired screen resolution.
Š On systems running the X Window System for display, copying the
graph image to the clipboard does work. However software that can
paste the image is still somewhat uncommon. X Window System
users may find saving the graph as a JPEG file more useful.
