Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Electronic Products Repiair and Maintain

PREFACE

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) consists of learning activities that will give you
knowledge on the competency of using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in
accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety procedures. This will give
you a deep background on the importance of each PPE in the working area most
especially when you are maintaining or repairing consumer electronic products and
as part of the compliance of safety procedures. This SLK is intended for Senior High
School learners.

In this competency, you have to deal with different PPEs that is used to
protect the different parts of the body that may be exposed in the working area.
To achieve the learning outcome (Maintain/Repair Electronic Products), it is a part
of the compliance of health and safety procedures that requires knowledge on the
PPEs. To achieve at least an 80% level of proficiency, read carefully and do not skip
any part of this SLK. The content of this SLK was aligned with the updated industry
standard that you will use either on electronic shop or manufacturing companies.

Keep in mind to carefully read this SLK and do not skip any part. Always keep
this material in good condition and neat at all times; do not write unnecessary things
on its pages. Use separate sheet of paper when answering your activities. Find out
given descriptors in the progress chart after having self - check of the activities.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, with at least 80% level of proficiency, you should able to:

1. identify different Personal Protective Equipment used in electronic

maintenance or repair through definition of its function;

2. appreciate the safety protection when wearing Personal Protective

Equipment used in Electronics by analyzing a scenario in maintaining or
repairing electronic products; and

3. demonstrate the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment used in

Electronics by identifying the correct safety precaution.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES

1. Maintain/Repair Consumer Electronic Products (LO4)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Electronic Product Assembly and Servicing (EPAS) uses different personal pro-
tective equipment (PPE) as compliance on the Occupational Health and Safety Pro-
cedure. PPEs are used to protect us from the different risks in the workplace. These
will protect the different parts of our body like head, eyes or face, ears, respiratory
organs, arms, hands, torso, feet and legs. To protect our health safety the PPEs are;

Protective Hat/ Hard Hat

–it protects our head from possible fallen debris, or impact blows, which can
penetrate and absorb the impact of these risks. For maintaining/repairing electronic
products we used the kind of hat based on the standard use in manufacturing that
can protect us from impacts or voltage (https://ehs.ucmerced.edu, 2019).

Type and Classes of Hard Hat

Class G (Formerly Class A)

– for general use and non-conducting, use for work dealing low voltage elec-
trical conductors.

Class E (Formerly Class B)

– use to reduce the danger of exposure to high voltage electrical shocks and
burns.

Class (Formerly Class C)

– they are used for impact protection and not intended to protect us from
electrical shocks (https://www.envirosafetyproducts.com, 2019).

8
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Electronic Products Repiair and Maintain

Safety Spectacles/ Goggles / Protective Eyewear

– it used to protect our face and eyes from hazards like, chemical, metal splash,
dust, projectiles, gas and vapor, radiation. There are different types of eye protection
that we can use depending on our needs (https://ehs.ucmerced.edu/, 2019).

Type of Eye or Face protection

General Safety Glasses – it can only provide

a low level of protection and it is only
recommended for use with solutions that are
not likely to damage the eye, such as buffers
and salts

Laser Safety Glasses – it is use to protect us from

harmful exposure to lasers.

Chemical Splash Goggles – can act impact

goggles to prevent flying debris from
reaching the eyes, recommended to use
when dealing with chemicals or infectious
substance.

9
Self Lerning Kit in Electronic Product Assembly and Servicing

Impact Goggles – protect the eyes

from flying debris, and susceptible
to chemical splashes, dust or small
debris.

Face Shield – required when

splashes from chemicals that can
cause immediate skin damage like
dealing with acids.

Earplugs/ Earmuffs/ Canal Caps – it

is used to protect our ears from high
decibels of noise which can cause to
hearing impairment.

10
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Electronic Products Repiair and Maintain

Mask/ Respiratory Protective Equipment – it

is used to protect us from inhalation of dust,
vapour and gases, and electronic fumes
by filtering the air. In industrial procedures
they used fume extractor to avoid the
inhalation of solder fumes.

Gloves/Long sleeve – it is used to protect

our hand and arms from hazards like,
burns, cuts, electrical shock, amputation
and absorption of chemicals. In soldering
electronic products we deal with the
soldering iron that used heat to solder,
wearing of gloves/long sleeve will help to
protect us from burn.

Apron/ Full Body Suit – it can protect our

body from metal splash, heat, cut, pressure
leaks, excessive wear, entanglement of
clothing, contaminated dust, impact and
chemicals.

11
Self Lerning Kit in Electronic Product Assembly and Servicing

Safety Boots/Shoes – it can protect us

from electro static build up, wet, cold and
hot condition, cuts and punctures, heavy
loads, fallen objects, metal and chemical
splash and vehicles.

Antistatic wrist strap – a safety device used

to channel static electricity to a proper
ground while handling sensitive electronic
equipment, it is used to avoid the build-
up of static electricity by clipping the one
end on any metal or object connected to
ground and the other end is banded on
the wrist (webopedia.com, 2019).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
FOR REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE
Did you know that it is necessary for us to wear PPEs? Did you know
that each part of our body can be protected by wearing appropriate PPE?

It is essential for you to know the different personal protective equipment
(PPEs) you need to use whenever you are repairing or maintaining electronic
products. There are different PPEs that you are required to use whenever
you are working either in the electronic shop in school or in the industry.

For further understanding about these personal protective equipment used

in electronics, this SLK offers you a deeper understanding through series of activities.
