Maintaining an Active Lifestyle

Lifestyle has a significant influence on the physical and mental health of individuals. It
refers to the characteristics and the way of living of the people in every region. It includes day-
to-day behaviors of individuals towards their jobs, activities, recreation, and die. According to
the World Health Organization
(WHO) 60% of related facts regarding individual health and quality of life can be
attributed to one’s lifestyle. Changing the habit of using screentime-the time that people spend
watching television, playing video games, and using computers, phones, and tablets for things
that are not related to school or work, must be put into reality.
Aside from a healthy lifestyle, daily exercise also contributes to one’s health. It prevents
weight gain and keeps the person maintain healthy habits. Continuous exercise along with a
balanced diet increases immunity to various illnesses and promotes good health. To stay healthy,
an individual should not lack in or be deprived of sleep as well. Everyone needs at least eight
hours of sleep daily to be able to function well. Lifestyle and sleep are interconnected as one
affects the other, and both greatly influence an individual’s mental and physical health.

The Food Pyramid and the Food Plate

2

There is a saying that “you are what you eat.” If you eat healthy foods, then, you will have a
healthy body. A study of the food pyramid is a very good approach to evaluate the kinds of food
an individual eats and the volume of food he or she takes and to examine one’s eating habits
whether they are healthful or not.
A food pyramid or diet pyramid is a pyramid-shaped diagram representing the number of
servings to be eaten each day for each of the basic food groups. The pyramid, also called the
plate guide, shows the proper proportions of the five food groups promoting a healthy eating
pattern. The said food guide pyramid was introduced in 1992 as the model of healthy eating. It
was first used in the United States and was adopted all over the world. However, in recent years,
research proved that the food pyramid brought confusion because it was too general. Hence, the
health agencies decided to change the symbol for the nutrition guide. Then, came a colorful food
plate called MyPlate. This term was coined in 2011. MyPlate emphasizes the division of the five
food groups namely: grains, vegetables, fruits, protein, and dairy foods.

1. Grains – These are sources of magnesium, vitamin B, and fiber that works
collectively to reduce the risk of heart diseases and diabetes, and at the same time
support a healthy metabolism. One-quarter of the plate should be filled with
grains.

2. Vegetables – These are loaded with nutrients and are naturally low in fat and
cholesterol-free. Vegetables should be combined with fruits because fruits also
provide nutrients like potassium, fiber, folic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Both
vegetables and fruit reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart diseases,
stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. One-half of the plate should
contain vegetables and fruits.

3. Fruits – Like vegetables, they are low in calories and positively contribute to one’s
health, unlike high-calorie foods. Fruit also contains anti-oxidant properties.
3

4. Protein – This supports muscles and is an important component of body tissues,

blood, and hormones. This can be found in meat, eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts, and
seeds. Fish and shellfish contain heart-healthy Omega 3 fatty acids that help
prevent heart diseases. About one-quarter of the plate should contain protein-rich
food.

5. Dairy foods – These have all the nutrients good for bone health. These nutrients
are potassium, calcium, and vitamin D. They also help control blood pressure. A
glass of milk or a sufficient portion of dairy foods should be taken along with the
other contents of the food plate.
