1. Course drop prior to End Semester

Proposal: Allow a student to drop a course one week prior to End Semester.
Proposed by : Kapil Paranjape

Justification:

From the point of view of the student, this avoids an ‘F’grade in their transcript.

From the point of view of the instructor, this avoids un-necessary agonising
over award of poor grades to students who have demonstrated lack of
interest/ability in the course.

What purpose does the existing system serve?

The primary purpose of awarding an ‘F’grade to a student is to indicate that

they have not completed the basis requirements of the course and thus that they
need to repeat it (modulo the 2 ‘F’relaxation).

The secondary purpose is merely punitive. To indicate that the approach of the
student to the course is wrong and will not lead to them meeting its
requirements.

In both cases, these two aspects are already clear to the student at the proposed
time(one week before End Semester). No one will argue that the instructor
receives vicarious pleasure in awarding an ‘F’grads as a punishment for poor

approach.
Decision: All the departments may come out after discussion in their respective
departments and can back again to the Senate..

2. Mr. Neetish Kumar Sharma, MS14064

Decision:
His candidature has been considered based on his representations.
The Academic Senate decided that he be advised to change his major
to continue in the programme for BS-MS. However, while
continuing if he opt for BS degree no change of major he has
required.

Hence, Academic Senate has permitted Mr. Neetish Kumar Sharma

as a special case to continue in the programme.
