Background Information:
A function is a relation for which each value from the set the first components of the ordered pairs is
associated with exactly one value from the set of second components of the ordered pair.
Functions have always been represented by a single equation. But in many real-life problems,
especially in business, a function can have more than one equation. It can consist of a combination of
equations such as a combination of linear and nonlinear equations, or a combination of nonlinear equations.
Such functions are called piecewise functions, where each equation corresponds to a certain domain of the
function.

Learning Competency:
M11GM-Ia-1 - represents real-life situations using functions, including piece –wise functions.
M11GM-Ia-2 – evaluates a functions
M11GM-Ia-3 – performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composite functions
M11GM-Ia-4 – solves problems real – life situation involving functions

Discussion/Examples:

LESSON 1: Mathematical Modelling Using Functions

A. Writing Piecewise Functions
Maria rides a jeepney to go to the market which is 14 km away from her house. The fare rate is
P8.00 for the first 4 km and an additional P1.40 for every kilometre or a fraction of it thereafter. What
mathematical model can be drawn out from the given situation?

Solution:
Number of kilometres Fare ( ) Relationship
First 4 km 8.00 ( )
5 km = ( 1 + 4 ) km 8.00 + 1.40 (5 – 4) ( ) 1.40 (5 – 4) = 9.40
6 km = ( 2 + 4) km 8.00 + 1.40 (6 – 4) ( ) 1.40 (6 – 4) = 10.80
km = ( + 4 ) km 8.00 + 1.40 ( – 4) ( ) 1.40 ( – 4) = 2.40 + 1.40

The model for this problem is given by rule ( ) {

LESSON 3:Operations on Functions
C. Perform the indicated operations
Definition:
For all the values of 𝑥 for which both 𝑔(𝑥) and (𝑥) are defined, we define the following:
Sum : (𝑔 )(𝑥) 𝑔(𝑥) (𝑥)
Differnce : (𝑔 )(𝑥) 𝑔(𝑥) (𝑥)
Product : (𝑔 )(𝑥) 𝑔(𝑥) (𝑥)
𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)
Quotient : ( ) (𝑥) (𝑥) ≠

Exercises:

A. Construct a mathematical model for the following real-life situations

1. You have a summer job that pays P250 for 8 hours of work a day. Beyond 8 hours, you are also
paid 1.5 time your hourly rate.
2. An internet café has a flat rate of P15 for the first hour of playing, surfing, and the like. An
additional P5 is charged for every hour in excess afterwards.
3. You and your classmates want to earn extra income this quarantine time. To do this, you will sell
online a disposable facemask. The wholesaler has the following conditions: if you purchase 100
boxes of disposable facemask, each costs P120; if you purchase between 100 and 300 boxes,
the price per box is lowered to P110; if you get more than 300 boxes, the price per box is
lowered by P15.

B. Evaluate the following expressions and functions according to the given conditions:
1. ( )

D. Problem Solving
1. The sum of two numbers is 109. One number is one more than twice the other number. Find the
two numbers
2. The sum of two numbers is 139. The smaller number is one less than one-third of the biggers
number. Find the bigger number
3. Cea deposited P50,000 in a bank that paid her P1,750 simple interest for one year. What is the
rate of interest for this deposit?
4. How much should Audree deposit in 7% simple interest paying bank to earn P24, 500 for one
year?
