Crafts of Lahaul

Narmdas (Rugs)

Namdas of Lahaul are very with their vibrant colours and motifs. These are made by beating
unprocessed sheep or goat wool. Namdas bring an essence of Himachali culture wherever they go
with the tourists and visitors.

Kapula (Footwear)

Made by plants and animals, Kapula is a very popular footwear of Lahaul and Spiti. They are made
with both goat and sheep wool, but the former is preferred over sheep wool because of its
durability.

Woollen products:

Woollens of Himachal Pradesh are popular because of the ancient tradition as well as necessity of
the common folks. They are both handmade and factory manufactured. The motifs and patterns are
very similar with green, blue, red, white, black and brown as the main colours.
Thapada (shawl):

These popular Himachali shawls can be found in Lahaul, Kinnaur and Manali. The patterns on it are
usually larger and have very ethnic motifs that bring an essence of the Himachali tradition to them.
Their designs is inimitable because they are either handmade or made with machines only found in
Himachal Pradesh.

Bamboo weaving:

Basket weaving is a very prevalent handicraft of Himachal Pradesh. These baskets are constructed
using a combination of three processes of basket weaving namely, plaiting, coiling and interlacing.
You can see them very frequently and commonly used by tea collecting labour in the tea fields.

Silver Jewellery:

Silver Jewellery is very commonly seen in almost every market in Himachal Pradesh. It comes with
wide range of products from necklaces, earrings, nose rings to bangles and anklets. These are very
popular amongst young adults because of its complimenting nature in both modern and traditional
wear.
Metal Craft:

The metal craft is used popularly to make statues of gods and goddesses also known as ‘Mohras’. It
is very prevalent in Himachal Pradesh because in the ancient times, the kings had craftsmen who
specialised specifically in metal craft, thus bringing and leaving this craft here.
