1. INTRODUCTION

The industrial engineering technician specialises in designing systems for

the economic use of natural resources and manpower to the benefit of
mankind. The involvement of the technician may be found in the design and
planning of new projects. These projects could include capital equipment,
civil construction work, workshops, production plants and even a mine.

1
The industrial engineering technician must ensure that the design elements
of the project are compatible and that the capital, plant, manpower, and
raw materials are optimally employed so that, consequently, the project is
feasible and economically viable. The industrial engineering technician is,
therefore the co-ordinator of a variety of disciplines, and their work and
experience extend across the entire spectrum of the enterprise's activities.

A formal definition would be:

The industrial engineering technician specialises in the investigation,

improvement, design and implementation of integrated systems comprising
capital, plant, manpower, and raw materials. His objective is the
establishment of optimum utilisation of all the production factors. He
obtained his knowledge and skills from mathematics, statistics, economics,
the physical and social sciences, and experiences in industry and
commerce. Consequently, he utilises the principles and techniques of
engineering, industrial economics and management in order to design the
systems to obtain the desired physical and economic results.

2. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the industrial engineering technician's logbook can be

summarised as follows:

2.1 Ensure that the learner technician receives the training, detailed in
the company's training programme

2.2 Serve as documented proof of training received, progress and

performance evaluations

2.3 Supply evaluated and approved documentation required by the

University considering the learner technician's application for his diploma to
be awarded

3. LEARNER TECHNICIAN'S RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 The student should show respect and understanding towards the
goals, rules and philosophies of the employer and the University

3.2 All problems regarding experiential training arrangements with the

University or the employer should be discussed with the mentor/supervisor

2
3.3 The University should be notified of any changes of address where
experiential training is undertaken

3.4 It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that his/her logbook is:

 Maintained on a daily basis

 Kept neat and tidy
 Kept in a safe place

3.5 Under no circumstances should the logbook include any classified

information without the approval of the employer

3.6 Short courses/seminars attended should be recorded and verified by

the mentor/supervisor with his/her signature

3.7 All the reports must be typed, evaluated and properly signed by the
mentor/supervisor before it is mailed to the University for final
evaluation and moderating purposes

3.8 Marked reports received back from the University should be included
in the appropriate spaces provided in the logbook

3.9 The logbooks should always be available during monitoring visits by

University staff

3.10 Fulfil both experiential training and academic education

requirements before applying for the diploma/degree to be awarded

39
After completion of each of the respective training periods (P1 & P2) the
learner technician should ensure that all his work is properly recorded,
evaluated, and signed in his/her logbook. After completion of both the
theoretical and experiential training component of the National Diploma, the
student must apply for the particular diploma to be awarded.

When applying for his/her diploma, the candidate will have to supply the
Registration Office with the following completed documents

UNIVERSITY APPROVED TRAINING PROGRAMME:

(i) An application form (Appendix A),

(ii) A covering letter from the employer (see Appendix B for

an example),

(iii) Fully completed evaluation forms (Appendix C),

(iv) Evaluated work-term reports (P1 & P2),

(v) A photocopy of his/her ID-book (for identification

purposes)

UNIVERSITY UNAPPROVED TRAINING PROGRAMME:

(i) An application form (Appendix A),

(ii) A covering letter from the employer (see Appendix B for

an example),

(iii A photocopy of his/her ID-book (for identification

purposes)

(iv) Logbook properly recorded, evaluated, and signed

NOTE:

The Head Experiential Training will direct the completed documents to the
Examination Office for processing

The examination office will process the documents for evaluation and
approval by the respective Program Senior Lecturers

It will take about two months after the application for a diploma has been
received, before the student will receive a letter confirming the
approval/failure of his/her application. Students/employers are therefore
advised to submit their diploma applications as early as possible to
eliminate any inconvenience. Students and employers must be patient and
not contact the University telephonically regarding this matter.
