Summary on Morality under Teaching Profession

Hello everyone. My name is Johann Emmanuel Molato. A DTS student from EVSU Ormoc City Campus.
I’m here today to share my summary about Morality, a topic under the subject, Seminar on Teaching
Profession. This topic was discussed during our seminar last March 20, 2021 by our speaker Mrs. Jessica
S. Rosquites. The word morality comes from the Latin word “Moralis” which means proper behavior of a
person in society. It is concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or
badness of human character. Principle on the other hand, means a rule of conduct based on beliefs of
what is right and wrong. It came from the Latin word “princeps” which means “a source or beginning.”

Why does teaching morality matter? As a future educator, teachers are the one who possess dignity and
reputation with high moral values as well as technical and professional competence. In our society
today, we hear and read articles or posts on the internet or social media about violence, apathy,
offense, and divisiveness. We also need to use soc-med responsibly like the non-sensical hashtag
challenges that could actually be dangerous to one self or others. This has been prevalent on the
younger generations. We need to instill values and morals to our youth more than ever. We need to go
back to the days where we give emphasis on the subject Values Ed. in our system. Teaching morality
matters because treating your neighbor as yourself has been a less frequent practice. The question is
how do we do it? There are 4 ways in describing moral character of a teacher. First, is being fully human,
second, is being a loving person, third, is being a virtuous person, and lastly, being a morally matured
person. So, what does it mean and how we can apply these inside the classroom? A teacher should be
fully human, which means that he has a sound heart and mind to teach and imbue moral values to his
students. A teacher must be virtuous, he must know what is right from wrong. He must not only impart
virtuous traits but also practices it. When students see that the teacher practice what he preaches,
students will eventually show respect and develop inspiration. A teacher must be a morally-matured
person. He must know what decisions to make, has a purpose, and respects himself and others as well.
Teachers are like the Avengers in the eyes of their students. They must have the skills and mastery on
the subject and he must also possess good moral character so that students will see them as a role
model inside and outside the classroom.

In conclusion, we need teachers in our society today that has an investment in character and values
education that will set as an example to the students. If students are valued by not only their teachers
but their peers as well, they want to be at school. The importance of character education is to teach our
students with morality such as respect towards others, honesty, compassion for others, and teamwork.
Teachers must strive in instilling these traits, values, and not just simply knowledge. Studying for an
exam can be done under a short period of time but teaching morals is a long process. And I believe this
must be our pivotal goal for better generations to come.
