Topcon Positioning Group has announced
the newest release of its suite of software for
construction and survey professionals, MAGNET 7.
The software is designed to utilise the strength that
cloud-based connectivity can play in streamlining
workflows through GNSS receivers, total stations,
and other positioning tools and instruments. It also,
according to Topcon, addresses common needs to
increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability
levels across the job site spectrum.
“The push to ramp up production levels and
increase efficiency, while operating profitably, has
never been greater,” said Alok Srivastava, senior
director, product management, Topcon.
“Our suite, made up of field software, cloud

Cat at work on sustainability

Jonathan Davies, industry manager of paving at Finning UK and Ireland, exclusive distributor
of Cat products, says better-equipped machines can help maximise productivity, while
maintaining safe and sustainable operations.
He says, “It is optimistic to say that encouraging cycling and walking in cities will counteract
the environmental impact of the paving sector. Companies must equip themselves with
sustainable machinery to carry out clean operations. The latest asphalt pavers have an
advanced eco-mode setting that modifies engine speed based on load conditions. This cuts
fuel burn by five per cent and maximises the performance of the machine.
“The environmental impact of the paving sector,” Davies says, “is one area that represents
a significant opportunity for improvement. In fact, it is estimated that one standard asphalt
paver produces 170.3 kilograms of CO2 per full tank of diesel. To tackle this head-on, electric

Using cranes to build bridges

Italian contractor Astaldi, in a joint venture partnership with Japanese company IHI, is using
four Raimondi MRT294 flat top tower cranes to build a suspension bridge over the Danube
river in Romania.
Part of a €435 million infrastructure project that will connect the cities of Brăila and Jijila,
the bridge will be almost 2km long. It will have a main span measuring 1.1km and two side
spans of 490 and 365m long.
Each of Astaldi’s four tower cranes are equipped with a 46m-long jib, offering a maximum
lifting capacity of 16 tonnes and a 3.5 tonne 70m tip load.
According to manufacturer Raimondi, Astaldi purchased the MRT294 model for its capacity
at the jib tip and its hoist speed.
Cristian Badin, Commercial Director, Raimondi Cranes, says, “The project came with some
specific challenges. In fact, if the standard MRT294 comes with maximum rope capacity
of 700m, in this case to fulfil the client requirements and project specifications we had to
readjust the cranes’ rope length to reach the final height of above 200m. Therefore, a new

Technical Dept.”
“Due to the nature of the project and the shape of the pillars, another important aspect we
had to consider was the design of stable and resistant steel anchoring connections to ensure
firmness at different working lengths.”
Erected between August and September in 2020, the cranes have already been used at
heights of between 210 and 218m. They will be in use for the duration of the project, which

Anti-collision
systems
When multiple cranes of various makes,
models and configurations are used,
preventing the massive machines from
hitting each other is of paramount
importance.
At Hinkley Point C power plant in the UK
52 horizontal and flat top cranes – including
four travelling models – are currently in use.
Managing the safe movement of each
crane is therefore a big technical challenge,
as there are several areas of space around
each crane in which their movement
could ‘interfere’ with the movements of an
adjacent crane and cause a collision.
To prevent this, AMCS technologies has
equipped all 52 cranes – among which is

New spider lift from Hinowa

Hinowa has announced that it will launch the TeleCrawler TC22 in the
fourth quarter of 2021.
The spider lift will be available in two versions, the TC22N and
TC22S. The lightweight model, at less than 3 tonnes, can reach a
working height of 22m and has an outreach up to 12.5m.
Like Hinowa’s recently released TeleCrawler TC13 N and TC13 S
models, the new lift has an all-electric drive. The undercarriage is
constructed by using electric traction motors which allow it to travel
on electric power only, without the use of hydraulic oil.
It will be offered with three different drive options: Kubota diesel
