British music through time:70´s

1.INFLUENCES:

David Bowie has influenced a lot of bands and artists such as Nirvana, Lady
Gaga, The Cure, Placebo, Depeche Mode, U2, Blur, Madonna, Prince…

In his beginning, he was influenced by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed,
Kubrick´s films and later around the seventies and eighties artists like Chuck
Berry or James Brown although Andy Warhol was the greatest inspiration of
Bowie.

Bowie said about Warhol:I extended my hand and the guy retired, so I thought
'The guy doesn't like flesh, obviously he's reptilian.'

The Queen was mainly influenced by British bands around the same time that
they were. Bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and
David Bowie.The Queen have been recognised as one of the biggest
contributions to such genres as arena rock, hard rock, heavy metal, pop rock
and progressive rock...

The collection of bands and artists that have claimed to be influenced by


Queen is diverse and spans different generations, countries and genres. Some
of the musicians that have cited the band as an influence are: Anthrax, Blind
Guardian, Kurt Cobain, Def Leppard, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Guns
N' Roses, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Marilyn Manson, Metallica,
Muse, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins...

2.AUDITORY FORMAT: Their albums were sold through vynil recordings.

3.PUBLICITY: The only ways of marketing were radio and television.But maybe
more radio than television so there were a few BBC channels to emit music.

4.AUDIENCE:

David Bowie. His public was very diverse.He knew that his fans liked looking at
him at least as much as they liked listening to him. On the other hand, Bowie
was followed by the gay collective.

The Queen. The public was very different. The Queen gets to sell 5,407,587
copies.
DAVID BOWIE:"I always had a repulsive need to be something more than
human."

Known as a musical chameleon for his appearance changes and music. David
Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London, England, on
January 8, 1947.

In early years, he studied with a mime group,in 1969 formed the experimental
art group Beckenham arts lab.He felt the music as theatre.

Out of fear of being confounded with Davy Jones of The Monkees, David
changed his last name to Bowie, a name that was inspired by the knife
developed by Jim Bowie.

Albums and Songs:

Space Oddity(1969) might be considered his official beginning:It was his first
single and quickly resonated with the public.It was Top 10 hit (years later his
first UK #1)
Bowie said the song came to him after seeing Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space
Odyssey. Besides, Space Oddity caused in large part by the BBC's use of the
single during its coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing. This song marked the
birth of the first successful Bowie mythic character.
In 1970, Bowie made a kind of heavier rock sound with The man who sold the
world.
Bowie's next album was Hunky Dory (1971) where did homage to Andy Warhol
and Bod Dylan.In this album Bowie published the famous song Life on mars?
His 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from
Mars, made him a superstar.He became Ziggy Stardust:an androgynous,
bisexual rock star from another planet with theatrical concerts which were a
sensation throughout England.In this album we find a known song Starman that
contains a message of hope to Earth's youth through the radio, salvation by an
alien 'Starman'.
In 1973 happens the fall of Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie broke up his band and
produced Transformer (Lou Reed) and The Stooges (Raw Power) but also other
individual albums like Aladdin Sane and Diamonds dogs (1974) with the song
Rebel Rebel(number 5 in UK singles chart)
His album Young Americans released in 1975 with the song Fame, co-written
with John Lennon hitting the #1 spot the same year the album was released.
With Station to Station(1976) brought in a new persona The Thin White Duke
very influenced by cocaine. When he arrived in the UK, he gave them a nazi
salute...It was very controversial.
From 1976 to 1979, Bowie produced 3 experimental albums in Germany with
Brian Eno(Berlin Trilogy):Low, Heroes and Lodger.
In later years songs like Ashes to ashes with the character Major Tom, a
fictional astronaut created by Bowie, who was also in Space Oddity lyrics.
Let´s Dance, a duet with Mick Jagger, it was an album that contained China Girl
or Modern Love very successful songs too.
Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Curious facts:
Mick Ronson and Bowie achieved some notoriety over the concerts promoting
this album, when Bowie would simulate fellatio on Ronson's guitar as he

THE QUEEN:” I won´t be a rock star.I will be a legend” Freddie Mercury.


Queen was a glam rock/heavy metal band that started out in 1971 in London.
Their members are Brian May (Guitarist) Roger Taylor(Drummer) Freddie
Mercury (Lead vocalist) John Deacon (Bassist)
Albums and Songs:
In 1973 signed their first recording contract for EMI. They released their first
album QUEEN and their first major UK tour.In addition they published the
second album QUEEN II, the same year (1974) that they would make it big with
their third album Sheer Heart Attack that went to number two in the UK.
It was the 1975 release of the international success A Night At The Opera
which would make them superstars. The album would go to number five in the
US, but in Britain it went to number one and stayed there for nine weeks. The
album had a little bit of everything including the seven minute single Bohemian
Rhapsody, a mini opera written by Mercury. Bohemian Rhapsody received two
Grammy Award nominations for Best Pop Vocal Performance.

The next album, A Day At The Races, released in 1976 was another hit and
included the single, Somebody To Love.

News of the World is the sixth studio album , released in 1977. Containing the
hit songs We Will Rock You, We are the Champions still today used as an
anthem for champion sports teams worldwide and Spread Your Wings. This
album went 4 times platinum in the US, 2 times platinum in the UK and
achieved high certifications around the world. In 1978, still more success came
Queen's way with the release of Jazz with yet one more double a hit single, Fat
Bottomed Girls and Bicycle Race. Furthermore, the known song Don´t stop me
now included in this album.

In later years we can find other songs very acclaimed by fans such as Crazy
Little Thing Called Love, an Elvis like song, Another One Bites the Dust, Under
Pressure recorded with David Bowie went number one in Britain in 1981, I
Want to Break Free was very popular above all because members of the group
dressed up women clothes in the clip.

But by early 1991, the end was near for the band. Mercury was gravely ill with
AIDS, although his fans didn't have a clue about this. On November 22, he
issued a statement confirming he had AIDS. He died just two days later. This
was something that shocked the world, it knocked the hearts of all the fans and
their generation. Freddie Mercury was an artist with an excellent voice, an
enormous talent.

LED ZEPPELIN:
Led Zeppelin was rock's first real Heavy Metal band. Led Zeppelin was formed
in 1968 by Jimmy Page. The members were Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul
Jones and John Bonham. Their musical style was diverse, they came to be well
known for their influence on the development of heavy metal.They are one of
the best-selling bands in the history. Some sources estimate the group's record
sales at 200 to 300 million units worldwide.

It has songs such as Lotta Love(1969), Stairway to Heaven(1971), Black


Dog(1971), Kashmir (1975), Ramble On (1969), Good Times Bad Times(1969),
Immigrant Song(1970), When the Levee Breaks(1971) and the best album of
this band is Led Zeppelin IV that it also is the best album of 1971.

Interesting Facts:

When Physical Graffiti was released, all 5 of their previous albums reentered
the charts. They were the first band to have 6 albums chart at once.

The band broke up when John Bonham died after a drinking binge at Jimmy
Page's house on September 25, 1980.

SEX PISTOLS:
In 1975 was formed Sex Pistols comprised of singer Johnny Rotten, lead guitar
player Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bass player Glen Matlock who was
replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977.They were one of the most influential
punk bands.

They gained fame with the song Anarchy in The UK. They played other famous
songs like Pretty Vacant(1977), Belsen was a Gas(1978) and God Save the
Queen which insult The Queen Elizabeth II. Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The
Sex Pistols is the only studio album they released. All others were live albums,
compilations or movie soundtracks.

Interesting Facts:

In 2005, they were voted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. They refused to
attend the ceremony and sent a note to Rolling Stone magazine voicing their
displeasure with the institution ("Next to the Sex Pistols, that Hall Of Fame is a
piss stain"). Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner read the note in its entirety at
the ceremony.

In January 1978, at the end of a tour of the United States, Rotten left the Sex
Pistols and announced its break-up.
