7. Below are two similar square pyramids with a volume ratio of 8:27. The base lengths are equal
to the heights. Use this to answer the following questions.
i) What is the scale factor?

Given that the ratio of their volume is 8: 27 which means that the ratio of their
𝟏 𝟏
base lengths will be (𝟖)𝟑 ∶ (𝟐𝟕)𝟑 or 2 : 3 which is the scale factor.

ii) What is the ratio of the total surface areas?

The ratio of the total surface area will be 𝟐𝟐 ∶ 𝟑𝟐 𝒐𝒓 𝟒 ∶ 𝟗 .

iii) Find 𝒉, 𝒙, and 𝒚.

As it is given that the base length is equal to height, it means that for smaller
pyramid, y = 8
from the scale factor, we can say that
8 ∶ 𝑥=2∶3
8×3
𝑥=
2
𝑥 = 12
So, x = 12 and consequently, h = 12.

iv) Find 𝒘 and 𝒛.

w is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose perpendicular is 8 and base is half

of 8 which is 4

So, 𝑤 = √82 + 42

𝒘 = 𝟒√𝟓

Similarly, z is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose perpendicular is 12 and

base is half of 12 which is 6

So, 𝑧 = √122 + 62

𝒛 = 𝟔√𝟓

vi) What is volume of larger pyramid?

8 ∶ 27 = ∶𝑉
3
27 × 512
𝑉=
3×8
𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅 = 𝟓𝟕𝟔 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝟑

𝐿𝑆𝐴 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑦𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑑 = × 8 × 8
2
𝑳𝑺𝑨 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅 = 𝟑𝟐 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝟐

v) Find the measure of one lateral surface area of larger pyramid.

Using the scale factor,
4 ∶ 9 = 32 ∶ 𝐴
9 × 32
𝐴=
4
𝑳𝑺𝑨 𝒐𝒇 𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅 = 𝟕𝟐 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝟐
