OVERVIEW: This course uses insights from Anthropology, Political Science, and
Sociology to develop students’ awareness of cultural, social and political
dynamics, and sensitivity to cultural diversity; provide them with an
understanding of how culture, human agency, society and politics work;
and engage them in the examination of the country’s current human
development goals. At the end of the course, students should acquire
ideas about human cultures, human agency, society and politics;
recognize cultural relativism and social inclusiveness to overcome
prejudices; and develop social and cultural competence to guide their

interactions with groups, communities, networks, and institutions.

TOPIC 1:Manifestations of human variations, social differences, social change,


and political identities.

DISCUSSION:
✔ Cultural diversity is the quality of diverse or different cultures, as opposed to monoculture,
the global monoculture, or a homogenization of cultures, akin to cultural evolution. The term
cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other's differences.

✔ Social Difference - Social differences are the differences and discriminations that occur in
society. Many social differences are generally based on the accidents of birth.

✔ Social stratification - refers to a society’s categorization of its people into rankings of


socioeconomic tiers based on factors like wealth, income, race, education, and power.

✔ Identity politics is a political approach wherein people of a particular gender, religion, race,
social background, class or other identifying factors, develop political agendas that are based
upon theoretical interlocking systems of oppression that may affect their lives and come from
their various identities.

TOPIC 2 :Significance of Studying Culture, Society and Politics
DISCUSSION:

● Anthropology - is the scientific study of humanity, concerned with human behavior, human
biology, cultures and societies, in both the present and past, including past human species.
Social anthropology studies patterns of behaviour, while cultural anthropology studies cultural
meaning, including norms and values.
● Sociology - is a social science that focuses on society, human social behaviour, patterns of
social relationships, social interaction, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life.
● Political science - is the scientific study of politics. It is a social science dealing with systems
of governance and power, and the analysis of political activities, political thought, political
behavior, and associated constitutions and laws.
