A SEMI- DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN

INTRODUCTION TO WORLD RELIGIONS AND BELIEF SYSTEMS

I- OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

a. identify the positive and negative effects of religion;


b. cite examples which depict negative effects of religion in a society;
c. value the importance of religion as an aspect in the development of civilizations and cultures
through oral recitation.

II- SUBJECT MATTER


Topic: Positive and Negative Effects of Religion
Reference: Introduction to World Religions and Beliefs
Internet Sources: http://archive.freep.com/article2014 ; http://wikipedia.com
Materials: Video clip, Pictures of some of the world’s atrocities and conflicts

III- PROCEDURE
A. Daily Activities
- Preparation
- Prayer
- Arranging of chairs
B. Motivation
Let the class listen to John Lennon’s song “Imagine”.

C. ACTIVITY

- The teacher will ask the students about their ideas/ insights in these lines taken from the song
“Imagine.”
- Why do you think that the persona in the song is somewhat wishing/ hoping people to be as
one? What do you think is/are his or her experience/s?
- Why do you think the word “Religion” is being mentioned in the song?
- After the students answer the questions, she will present to the class a concept map of the
positive and negative effects of religion.

Group Activity:

- The students will be divided into five groups.


- Their task is to list down the negative and positive effects of religion that are evident in the
society.
- A representative from each group will present their output.
- The teacher will give appraisal and comments after each report.
- Clarifications and questions will then be addressed.

- Can you cite an example wherein religion reduces fear of the unknown?
- Does your belief/religion help you in shaping your goals in life? How?

E. ABSTRACTION

The teacher will show some of the world atrocities that were caused by religion.
The teacher will ask students further questions to measure their learning and
understanding about the topic.
 In your own opinion, can religion conflicts be avoided? How?
F. APPLICATION
The teacher will ask the students the application of the topic in real life setting.
 Is it important to study religions? Why or why not?
